Working with this client was so much fun because she has such an obvious eye for design. She’s not only an awesome physician, she also designs and makes clothing in her free time, so she really understands lines, balance, and how that translates into hair. Hairstyling is sculptural to me. Long or short, design angles, interior texture, and weight balance are always vitally important — but with short hair, even more so, because you don’t have the extra length to style through problem areas. Your cut has to do the talking.

This beauty came in struggling with bulk and a shape that just wasn’t quite right for her face. We spent time talking angles and gradients, then I removed a ton of bulk through the top, broke up ledges, and rebalanced her shape so it grows out gracefully. She has a lot of hair, so the goal was not just “great on day one,” but a cut that still looks intentional weeks later as it gets heavier.

Blonde like this is why I’ll never get tired of color theory. This is one of my favorite blondes I’ve done in a long time because it lives in two worlds at once: extreme brightness in the highlight ribbons, softened and grounded by a rich mahogany‑gold dark blonde lowlight. Those deeper ribbons diffuse the blonde just enough to make it soft, dimensional, and incredibly elegant instead of flat and loud.

In the sun, she’ll read very bright – all that highlight work lights up. Indoors, the warmth and depth come forward and you see this velvety, expensive-looking blonde instead of one solid block of color. That’s why placement and formulation matter so much: I’m always thinking, ‘How will this look in motion? In shade? In sunlight? When she turns her head?’

My favorite colors are the ones that make people do a double‑take when you move – where every angle shows something a little different and a lot more magical. This color does exactly that.

This is my daughter Sidney, and we’re in the ‘in‑between’ season of growing her natural hair out. Short hair grow‑outs can feel so heavy and triangle‑y at the bottom, but with a few intentional trims to remove that triangle base, added texture for movement, and some soft, softening highlights, the whole process can actually be fun instead of frustrating. I love how light and airy her shape is now, and how the subtle color lets her natural texture be the star.
