How do spray tans work?

At the heart of every spray tan is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless sugar derived from beets or sugar cane. The DHA reacts with dead skin cells on the surface of the skin and temporarily darkens the skin to give it a tanned appearance.

The coloring of the skin will usually fade within days to weeks depending on the product type, i.e. whether it is a gradual tanner or full color product. (Here at High Voltage Sunless Tanning, our tans usually last 8-10 days)

This fading process occurs as the dead skin cells are shed from the body. This is why sunless tanning products tend to vary in fade time from person to person. It is also the reason why we recommend you exfoliate before your tan to help achieve a long-lasting glow.

For this Tan we used our medium solution which gave me a beautiful streak-free all over glow.

What is great about our solutions is, we have the ability to custom mix shades to give you the exact amount of bronze you desire! We can easily go lighter or darker for my next tan!

Being a fair skinned girly, a tan this dark would be impossible to achieve without damaging my skin (believe me I’ve tried sun tanning 🥲). So I LOVE the fact that I can get a killer glow with a 10 min spray tan 🤎

A crucial step to achieving the perfect glow is applying barrier cream!

What is barrier cream?
Barrier cream is a thick lotion that is meant to act as a “barrier” between the spray tan solution and the skin. The reason barrier cream is different from your regular day-to-day lotion, is because it is made to have a thicker viscosity so that it doesn’t allow as much of the solution to pe*****te into the skin.

We use barrier cream to create a barrier between the spray tan solution and the skin. You may be thinking, “isn’t that the opposite of what we are trying to accomplish!?”

The reason behind doing this is because some areas on the body tend to have more dryness than others (think elbows, knees, hands, feet). So it’s important to create a barrier so those areas do not over saturate during your tan.

Barrier Cream is a holy grail product for making sure those hands, feet and wrists look natural when your rinse off your sunless tan
