Starting off this series with the viral ponytail hack. This might be the tiniest ponytail I’ve ever made… but it has a very important job!

If you’re creating a downstyle that sits right on your clients neck, creating a small ponytail at the nape creates just enough space for a little more airflow without changing the look of the style. And yes… there’s actually a ponytail hiding in there 😂 but you’d never know it from the finished result.

If your client has finer hair and you’re worried about the ponytail poking through, try creating a horizontal braid in this section instead and pinning it up to the roots to create the same effect without the risk of anything popping out.

One tiny trick, one much happier neck, especially when it’s 90° and humid outside.

The reveal ✨✨

We ended up doing exactly what she originally envisioned… and then she looked in the mirror and realized the front just wasn’t looking the way she had pictured it in her head…

And THAT is exactly what your bridal trial is for! We made a few small tweaks, played around with the front, and kept adjusting until she looked in the mirror and felt good about what she was seeing.

You’re not supposed to know exactly what you’ll love before you see it on yourself! Your trial is the time to figure out what you like, what you don’t like, and what little changes make the whole look feel more like you.

And alwaysss, know that it is a safe space to speak up! If something isn’t feeling right, tell your hairstylist. I would much rather make those adjustments at your trial than have you silently settle for something you’re not completely sure about or trying to figure it out on the wedding day.

The goal isn’t to leave your trial with the exact hairstyle you walked in imagining. It’s to leave knowing you feel GOOD in the hairstyle you’re actually going to wear 💛

Her dress had a LOT to do with how much hair she wanted to cut before the wedding 👀

She knew she wanted to take off about 6 inches so the detail on the back of her dress wouldn’t get lost in her hair, but we also weren’t 100% sure what we wanted to do with the front yet.

So this trial was all about figuring it out, playing around with the details, and seeing what felt the most like her.

And let’s just say… we had a few different ideas for that front before we landed on the right one. 😂

This walk, on a 90 degree day, had me once again rethinking my hair kit choice 😅🫠

And was I really taking that long to figure out my set up or was I still trying to catch my breath from that walk? 🤫 just kidding I definitely overthink my setup 100% of the time but like can we talk about my work view today?!

Annika loved what we did at her trial but she wanted to spice it up a bit so we made a few small changes to give her hair more detail and made sure to elevate her natural curls so she still felt like her 💛

If you’re newly engaged, I have some advice for you 👇🏽

1. Choose your hairstylist based on the hairstyles they actually specialize in: If you want effortless, textured waves, look for a stylist whose portfolio consistently shows that style. Don’t choose someone that just “does a good job” but yet you don’t actually see a style you’d wear yourself.

2. Start mapping out your hair color goals with your hairstylist: if your dream wedding look is significantly blonder, you need to know how long that transformation is going to take. Your normal six-week color schedule might not get you where you want to be by the wedding.

3. Start growing out your hair strategically if length is part of your dream look: long hair does NOT = no haircuts for the next year! You want long healthy looking hair, not long straggly looking hair. Map out with your hairstylist how often you should be getting trims and any treatments that might benefit you to promote hair growth.

4. Book your hair and makeup team earlier than you think you need to: I don’t know who created those generic wedding planners that say to book us 4-6 months out, but they apparently hate us 😭 If hair/makeup is important to you (and it should be, it will literally be in all of your photos) 😅 book them as soon as you find one you love! Your date may feel so far away, but peak-season weekends can book 12-18 months out.

If you’ve ever wondered why we get to bridal suites so early, it’s to move every single piece of furniture and box that exists in the room 😅 it’s our little warm up we like to do before the full wedding hair marathon 😆
