MEN WITH LOCS ARE FEMININE
I keep seeing this conversation come up about Black men with long locs being “feminine,” and I’m gonna be honest… that mindset didn’t start with us.
That’s Eurocentric conditioning.
Somewhere along the line, we were taught that masculinity looks like short, straight, “neat” hair and anything outside of that gets labeled as unprofessional, unattractive, or in this case… feminine. And we’ve repeated it so much in our own community that it started sounding like truth.
But historically? That’s not our truth.
Black men across cultures wore long hair and locs as a symbol of strength, identity, and spirituality. Even in the story of Samson, his power was tied to his hair...not his masculinity being questioned because of it.
And let’s be real, we see this same thing with Black women. Our natural hair in its true state is still judged unless it’s straightened, pressed, or made to fit a more “acceptable” standard.
So when we say a Black man with long locs is feminine, or question why he’d want his hair long, what we’re really doing is reinforcing a standard that was never created for us in the first place.
Hair does not define masculinity or femininity. Character does. Confidence does. Identity does.
It’s time we stop policing each other based on standards that were never ours.
