Update on Adorn Natural Hair and Beauty.

It has been a long year, for sure, and we miss seeing your faces. As we reopen the shop according to Virginia State protocols, we are working hard to get as many servicers as we can back in the shop.

Yolonda's Status

We know many of you are quite eager for Yolonda to return. Unfortunately, Yolonda's return date is still unclear as she is recovering from a severe skin injury on her right (dominant) hand. Rest assured that you will be IMMEDIATELY notified when her servicing slots open up again. In the interim, please schedule appointments with Donise Redd-Martin via the Schedulicity site. Donise has been a training student with Yolonda and is receiving all Adorn clients at this point in time. She has availability on the weekends. Yolonda is still available for virtual consultations which can also be scheduled through Schedulicity.

His Image Barber Shop & Adorn Natural Hair and Beauty Classic and contemporary barbering and natural hair care/cultivation in a relaxing, community-oriented atmosphere that accomodates the business person, the student, the parent and the child.

Donise Redd-Martin, also known as Rebel Rad,
is the newest member of the His Image team, coming in under Adorn Natural Hair & Beauty (the “& Natural Hair Studio” portion of “His Image”).

Donise has been closely studying in professional theory and practice with co-owner and founder, Yolonda Coles Jones to deliver the Signature Adorn Natural Hair & Beauty experience since November of 2018.

She was the first trainee to participate in the Adorn Natural Hair & Beauty Intensive Professional Training Program founded by Yolonda Jones to preserve cultural practices and protect nurturing spaces for natural hair wearers in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. This endeavor was largely funded by a grant from the novel Heal Charlottesville Fund stewarded by the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation and the Community Investment Collaborative.

Desiring to pivot into the more focused niche of “natural hair”, Donise was working in the area of her prior cosmetology licensing as an in-home professional braider while also working as as a mental health professional.

Since coming on to the Adorn styling floor, her budding base of in-studio clients say:

“Donise has heavenly hands. I wanted a new look and she did not disappoint. I’m so in love [with] my new hair! One of these days I’ll learn how to take a good selfie to...really show off her excellent work.”

Donise is a devoted warrior mama to her two children and an advocate for wellness, freedom and fun.

Jamal Dowell, also known as “The Youngest Thundercat”, is an established entrepreneur. Upon returning to Charlottesville, VA from Georgia, he decided to team up with the crew at His Image as an independent contractor in 2015 and it has been an amazing fit for all.

Jamal brings great energy to the shop for intelligent and hilarious conversations. He has taken on an official leadership and managerial support position and added perspective and fresh energy to all that we do.

His love for his children and family is remarkable.

Whether cutting great hair or flipping (refurbishing) a car, “Dowell” is a business man with integrity and it is a pleasure to watch him service the community.

“RC” is also known as “Sizzle,” “Brother Deacon,” and “Minister Carter.”

He has been an independent contractor at His Image Barber Shop & Natural Hair Studio since 2009.

Colleague William “Will” Jones, III reflects:

“He is one of the most talented people I know. [As he would say] he ‘loves the Lord and he won’t take it back.’

We watched this dude mature from kitchen [hair]cuts to high quality [professional] grooming. Sizzle holds down the shop. He holds down his mother’s child care business and he gives plenty of time to his church home.

His skill set and career is a personally and professionally gratifying journey to watch and [to] be apart of.”

In addition to being a talented singer and musician (sometimes gracing our space with his gentle tenor vocals), RC is also (as the nicknames imply) a minister in his church and a motorcyclist!

During this Great Pause, as we are reflecting and moving in support of our desire to continue to serve our clients and our community at large, we’re stopping to feature members of the various teams that make His Image & Adorn go.

This is Demetrice Bear Walker. 🐻

Bear has a creative mind, not just for art but he also uses it to try to help people problem-solve or find solutions.

He’s often willing to help teach someone something.

Colleague, William Jones III reflects:

“He would rush away from a full day of cutting hair to make a football or basketball practice for his kids [that he coaches].
..Always willing to drop his clippers to assist a student learning to cut hair or even help more seasoned barbers with concept ideas on a design.

He has stopped cutting his clients to give assistance to kid clients having a difficult time in someone else’s chair.

Committed to his [differently-abled] mother and his family.

If you need a solar panel for your house, chances are he has one right in his drawer right now.

He loves the craft. He loves to take care of people that appreciate him. He bends over backwards for his clientele. Most of the time he has to though because he was mad late. 😄”

One of the best barbers in the area, he’s been an independent contractor with His Image Barber Shop & Natural Hair Studio since 2009.
