You know what’s probably in your gutters right now?

Leaves.

Pine needles.

Dirt.

Seeds.

Little sticks.

Dead bugs.

Moss.

And probably a whole bunch of other stuff you don’t really want to think about. 😂

All of that sits there, gets wet, breaks down, and eventually turns into this nasty layer of organic material sitting around on your roofline.

And then your gutters can’t actually do what they’re supposed to do.

Another little lakefront cleanup 👀

This walkway had a LOT of buildup on it.

And because it runs right along the lake, we had to approach this one a little differently. We weren’t about to use chemicals or soft wash anything and risk runoff going straight into the water.

So we cleaned it using a method that was safe for the area and still got all that buildup off the concrete.

This is one of those jobs where the difference is pretty dang obvious. 😂

Your gutters don’t have to be falling off your house for there to be a problem.

Sometimes they’re just full.

Sometimes they’re holding water.

Sometimes they’re overflowing in one spot every time it rains.

Sometimes you don’t even realize there’s an issue because you aren’t standing outside watching your gutters during a storm.

That’s why cleaning them regularly is just part of taking care of your house.

It’s definitely not the most exciting thing on the homeowner to-do list. 😂

But neither is repairing water damage.

Go outside and look at your gutters. Seriously. 😂

The next time it rains, even better.

Look for water pouring over the sides.

Look for one spot that’s constantly dripping.

Look for gutters that are sagging.

Look underneath them and see if water is running down the side of your house.

Look at your flower beds. Are they getting washed out underneath the gutters?

Your gutters are supposed to catch the water coming off your roof and move it away from your house.

If they’re not doing that, you’ve got a problem somewhere.

And sometimes you don’t realize there’s a problem until you’ve already got water damage.

So go look.

It takes about 30 seconds.

We did this walkway right along the lake, and this one definitely took a little more care than a normal concrete cleaning job.

We couldn’t use our normal soft wash process because we didn’t want anything getting into the water. So we had to be really careful about what we used and how we cleaned it.

It was pretty nasty before, though. 😂

And it cleaned up really well.

This is one of those jobs where you have to look at the whole property and what’s around it, not just the thing you’re cleaning. Every job is a little different, and sometimes you have to change how you do things to make sure you’re taking care of the property AND what’s around it.

I love how this one turned out. 👀

If you can see plants growing out of your gutters, I’m gonna go ahead and say they’re probably overdue for a cleaning. 😂

I’ve seen some pretty impressive things growing in gutters.

Leaves and dirt sit in there, they get wet, seeds find their way in, and before you know it you’ve basically got a little garden growing on your roofline.

And besides looking terrible, all that stuff holds moisture and adds weight to your gutters.

Okay, here’s something to watch the next time it rains.

If water is pouring over the sides of your gutters instead of going through them, there’s a pretty good chance something isn’t right.

Usually they’re clogged, or there’s a problem with how they’re draining.

And all that water has to go somewhere.

It can run down your siding, wash out your flower beds, pool up around your foundation, and just generally cause problems that you don’t want.

Your gutters are supposed to move water away from your house. That’s their whole job.

So if yours are overflowing every time it rains, don’t just ignore it.

And if you can’t remember the last time they were cleaned… 😂 it’s probably time.

One thing a lot of homeowners don’t think about until there’s a problem is their gutters.

Keeping them cleaned out regularly can save you from a lot of headaches later.

When gutters get packed full of leaves, pine needles, dirt and whatever else ends up in there, the water can’t drain like it’s supposed to.
