The emerging field of neurotheology—the study of the intersection between brain science and spiritual experiences—demonstrates that regular prayer alters both the functional activity and physical structure of the human brain.
Pioneered by researchers like Dr. Andrew Newberg using brain imaging techniques such as SPECT and fMRI, neuroscientific studies reveal distinct biological shifts during contemplative practices:
Frontal Lobe Activation: Focused, intentional prayer increases activity in the prefrontal cortex—the region responsible for executive function, concentration, and decision-making. Regular practice strengthens these neural pathways, enhancing focus and emotional self-regulation over time.
Amgydala Regulation: Brain scans show that spiritual practices down-regulate the activity of the amygdala, the brain's threat and fear center. This reduction helps lower circulating stress hormones like cortisol and calms the body's fight-or-flight response.
Anterior Cingulate Cortex Engagement: Contemplative prayer stimulates the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), an area closely tied to empathy, social bonding, and compassion.
Autonomic Nervous System Shift: The rhythmic nature of prayer—often paired with slowed, deep breathing—stimulates the vagus nerve, triggering the parasympathetic nervous system to slow heart rate and lower blood pressure.
Neuroplasticity in Action: Through neuroplasticity ("neurons that fire together, wire together"), long-term prayer physically reshapes neural architecture, building higher resilience against chronic anxiety and mental fatigue.
Far from being a passive state, prayer acts as an active neurological workout that engages executive control, dampens stress responses, and fosters emotional resilience.

Our gifts are like mirrors—meant to reflect the light of Christ into the world. But if pride fogs the glass, the reflection dims. Keep the mirror clean with humility, and His glory will shine brighter than anything we could ever claim for ourselves.

As a yoga teacher I am constantly asking students to inhale in their nose. find the audible swirl/slight restriction in the back of their throat and exhale out their nose. This doesn't seem to be a natural or practiced way of breathing for those who aren't familiar with a yoga practice and even then I often have students who still do open mouth breathing during practice and many never take a truly deep inhale or exhale expanding their lungs capacity.

Below is a little information on why I practice and ask students to practice breathing in and out their nose.... there's lots more to share..

Yoga has insisted on breathing through the nose.
Long before anyone could measure a single reason why.
And it turns out the reasons are real. When you breathe through your nose, the air is filtered, warmed, and humidified before it ever reaches your lungs. Your nose also releases nitric oxide, a gas that widens your blood vessels and helps your body absorb more oxygen from every breath. Your mouth does none of that.
There's more. Nasal breathing supports slower, fuller breaths and shifts you toward the rest-and-recover side of your nervous system. This is why the breath calms you. The tradition noticed the effect. Science later explained the mechanism.
And this is where it ties into everything I teach about aging well.
The way you breathe touches your sleep, your circulation, your stress, and how steady you feel in your own body over time. It's one of the few tools in health that is genuinely simple. Not always easy, but simple.
You take about 25,000 breaths a day. Every one of them is a small chance to support your body, without adding a single thing to your day.
So this week, just notice. Nose or mouth? And when you catch yourself, close your lips and let the breath come back to the nose.
This week's episode of Yoga for Longevity goes deep on all of it, the science of nasal breathing and what yoga understood about the breath long before we could prove it.

Essential oils are being studied where the stakes are highest.
A new systematic review of 18 ICU studies involving 1,236 critically ill people found that aromatherapy consistently improved anxiety, sleep quality, and pain, with some studies also reporting reductions in heart rate and blood pressure. Not surprisingly, essential oil blends often outperformed single oils. Lavender was highlighted for its benefits for sleep, pain, and anxiety, German chamomile for blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety reduction, rose for pain and reduced need for drugs, while eucalyptus showed the strongest effects on respiratory function in ventilated patients.
It's another reminder that essential oils aren't just about pleasant aromas—they're biologically active compounds capable of influencing human physiology, even in some of the most medically complex individuals.

“The Power of Human Touch”

A Devotional by Kerry Goode

There’s a kind of healing that doesn’t come from medicine—it comes from the warmth of another person’s hand. The human touch carries something divine, something that reminds us we’re still connected to life, to love, and to God Himself.

When we’re hurting, isolated, or weary, a simple touch can speak louder than words. It says, “You’re not forgotten.” It says, “You’re still here.” And sometimes, it says, “God hasn’t let go of you.”

Jesus understood this better than anyone. He didn’t just speak healing—He reached out and touched the sick, the broken, and the lonely. His hands carried compassion, and His touch carried power.

You don’t have to be a professional to bring that kind of healing. Everyday hands can do holy work. A hug, a pat on the shoulder, a gentle squeeze—these are small acts that carry eternal meaning.

So today, be someone’s reminder that they’re not alone. Offer your touch, your presence, your kindness. Because when you do, you’re not just comforting a person—you’re extending the hands of Christ Himself.

“And Jesus reached out His hand and touched him, saying, ‘I am willing; be clean.’” — Matthew 8:3
