**October 1998 🎃**

It’s Saturday afternoon, and Mom says you’re only going to Kmart for a few things.

But then you spot the Halloween aisle.

Plastic pumpkin buckets are stacked everywhere. Rubber masks stare down from the racks, costumes hang in crinkly plastic bags, and orange-and-black decorations cover nearly every display.

You pick up a mask and immediately start imagining Halloween night—running from house to house with your friends until your pumpkin bucket is too heavy to carry.

Mom tells you to choose one thing, so naturally, it becomes the most important decision of your entire weekend.

The fluorescent lights hum overhead. Shopping carts rattle across the tile. Somewhere nearby, someone is already setting up the Christmas layaway signs.

You didn’t know it then, but years later you’d give almost anything to spend one more October afternoon wandering the Halloween aisle at Kmart. 🎃🧡
