🐴✨A Relaxed Poll = Better Movement ✨🐴

The poll plays an important role in your horse’s balance, posture, and overall movement.

When tension builds here, it can affect the neck, shoulders, and even the back.

➡️Keeping the poll relaxed and mobile helps your horse move more freely and comfortably.

Muscle Spotlight 🐴 💡 Trapezius + Rhomboids

Did you know these muscles play a big role in your horse’s shoulder movement? 👀

Tension here can contribute to stiffness, reduced swing, and less powerful movement.

Keeping them healthy and mobile = happier, freer movement. ✨🐴

🐴💪🏼 Did you know your horse’s hamstrings can become tight just like yours?

✨✨✨✨✨✨

This simple stretch helps encourage flexibility, improve range of motion, and keep your horse moving comfortably.

💡🐴 Muscle Spotlight: Semimembranosus & Semitendinosus

✨These two powerful hamstring muscles work together to extend the hip, support hind-end engagement, and create forward movement.

⚠️When tight, they can restrict stride length, affect lateral work, and even make it harder for your horse to maintain the correct canter lead.

✨Healthy muscles 🟰 happier, freer movement.

🌟 How Can Tight Glutes Affect Your Horse’s Performance? 🌟

Tight gluteal muscles aren’t just a minor discomfort — they can seriously impact how your horse moves and performs:

➡️ Restricted forward motion
➡️ Inability to step the hind leg underneath the body
➡️ Increased tension through the back and topline
These issues can reduce suppleness, power, and overall comfort.

💫 What Can You Do After a Sportsmassage to Help?

Support the benefits of your horse’s massage with movement that encourages stretch and engagement:

👉🏻 Long & low canter – A few easy laps around the arena to promote relaxation and range of motion.
👉🏻 Hill work – Start with gentle inclines to build strength and stretch through the hindquarters.
👉🏻 Pole work – Great for coordination, core strength, and loosening up tight muscles.

Why use the Wilson-Meagher Method ❔

👉Sportsmassage specifically prepares the horse for exercise, unlike other massage techniques. If possible it’s best to apply techniques BEFORE the horse exercises.

⏰Once the techniques are applied, the massage should typically last around 30 minutes.

Before ➡️ After Sportsmassage
✨Gait Analysis ✨

Before working on a horse I analyze the horse at a walk. The gait analysis is performed at the walk & trot. It’s best to view the muscle function at the walk to determine which muscles are releasing & which are not. It all comes down to mechanics !

🐎After the massage the horse will then jog out. Exercise after the Sportsmassage with help further lengthen the muscles. 🐎

✨In the before & after videos you can see the Mare is now traveling much straighter throughout her body. She also has much more freedom in her right shoulder as well as in her left hind. ✨
➡️ Horse’s move in diagonal pairs. Therefore, if a horse has a tight right shoulder 9 times out of 10 they’re going to have a tight left hind. Horses strive for balance. When a specific area is tight they’re going to overcompensate on the opposing side to try and create balance.

🏇🏻 Let’s talk about the back 🏇🏻

🎈The Longissmius Dorsi is the longest muscle in the body. This muscle supports the weight of the rider. 🎈

➡️The Longissmius Dorsi extends the back. It also flexes the spine laterally.

📍This muscle runs from the withers to the sacrum & is located on the surface of the horse’s back. This muscle also sits directly underneath the saddle.

⚠️⛔️ Possible Causes ⛔️⚠️

⛔️ Imbalanced or poorly fitted saddle
⛔️Too many saddle pads
⛔️Discomfort in feet
⛔️Shipping long distances
⛔️Working on hard footing
