Sometimes the test strand makes the decision for us. 👀

This client came in with naturally dark hair wanting highlights, but she was also completely honest with me about her hair history — she’d had both color and a perm within the last two years.

Before I even considered lightening her whole head, I told her we were doing a test strand first. Non-negotiable.

And THIS was the result after only 30 minutes. 😳 to be fair I used a very low volume developer with the lightener which is what I would normally use during a service.
The hair became extremely stretchy, fragile and compromised. In other words… the highlights were a hard NO.

Could I have pushed it? Probably.
Would her hair have paid the price? Absolutely.

So we went to Plan B and will give her a gorgeous deep burgundy red instead. ❤️

This is exactly why I ask about your hair history, why I sometimes say no, and why test strands matter. My job isn’t just to get you to your dream color — it’s to make sure you still have healthy hair attached to your head when we’re finished. 😂

Sometimes the best color service is knowing when not to lighten.

There are things they don’t teach you in cosmetology school… like how to become a therapist, detective, forensic scientist, lie detector, and reality checker all while holding a comb. 😂

Why you should stick with one hairstylist.

Your stylist sees you every 6 to 8 weeks.

They will notice your part.

😎When you stick with one stylist, they know what is your normal and will quickly notice any changes.

Vitamin deficiencies, medication side effects, diabetes, heart problems, and skin cancer are all things that show up in your hair and skin and can be noticed early on if you have someone that sees you regularly.

It’s not just about looking good, it’s also about staying healthy.

True story:
years ago, one of my regulars who was a retired firefighter had been coming in for haircuts and I noticed a strange spot 👀
I told him about it, you should get that looked at.
He didn't, men never do. I kept an eye on it.. it kept changing getting darker, and uneven borders😬

I told him, this is concerning get this checked, no more haircuts till you do!
So.... he goes.
It was melanoma. The surgeon says "your stylist saved your life, 6 months and you'd have been gone"

Now, I knew what it was but " I couldn't say anything because it's considered diagnosing."
So if we tell you to get it checked, please listen🥰 we might save your life.

Today is Mattie’s last day at Twisted Beauty, and while we are incredibly excited for her next adventure, we are REALLY going to miss having her around here.

Mattie has been part of our little dysfunctional salon family for 2 years, 7 months and 1 day — not that anyone’s counting. 😂 During that time there have been a whole lot of laughs, questionable conversations, beautiful hair, chaos, inside jokes, and memories that we wouldn’t trade for anything.

Watching someone grow, find their footing, and then spread their wings is one of those proud-but-dammit-I-don’t-want-you-to-go moments.

Mattie, thank you for everything you’ve brought to Twisted Beauty and for being part of what makes this place what it is. Your chair may be empty, but your mark on this salon definitely won’t be.

We love you, we’re proud of you, and we’re cheering you on as you start this next chapter. 🖤

We use it. We ask it questions. We let it make our lives a little easier sometimes.

But ChatGPT is NOT standing behind my chair with a color brush. 😏

If you ask AI, “What formula should I use to get this hair color?” it can absolutely explain color theory and give you an idea of what might work.

What it CAN’T do is:

👀 See your hair accurately in natural light
🖐️ Feel the condition and porosity of your hair
🧪 Know exactly how your previous color is going to react
🎨 See every band, undertone and variation hiding in your hair
💪 Determine what your hair can safely handle
🧬 Know your actual percentage of gray or resistant hair
🔍 Perform a strand test
⚗️ Adjust a formula in real time as your hair processes
And about 17 other things we take into consideration.

Two people can walk in with what looks like the exact same starting color and require completely different formulas to reach the same result.

Professional hair color isn't a paint-by-numbers recipe.

When I formulate your color, I'm taking into account your starting level, underlying pigment, porosity, density, previous chemical history, gray percentage, desired result, condition of the hair AND the specific color line I'm working with.

And sometimes..... I change that formula while you're sitting in my chair because your hair tells me something I couldn't know beforehand.

So you're absolutely welcome to bring me the picture AI helped you create. Bring me your inspiration. Bring me your goal.

But please don't hand me a ChatGPT formula and say:

“It says you need to use this.” 😂

Because ChatGPT hasn't spent 27+ years behind the chair.

I have.

AI can suggest the destination. Your stylist still has to figure out how to safely get you there. ✂️🎨

If you have more confidence in an AI-generated formula than you do in the professional you've hired to color your hair, we're probably not the right salon for you, Just sayin❤️
