Over the last several days I have been observing what is happening all over the country and world. I have been worried and shocked but also inspired by the bravery of the protestors. Maybe just like many other first-generation immigrants who did not learn about American history in their schools, I didn't 100% understand what was happening or exactly why.
A few days ago my children asked me to sit down and discuss. I do not have a big platform but I want to still use it to say that what I saw happen to George Floyd on video was a senseless murder. It is not what I thought American police was capable of and I did not realize how deeply entrenched racism was in our institutions. Today would have also been Breanna Taylor's birthday, she is among the many other Black Lives that have been taken because of the color of their skin.
So today I think I have to just speak up and start somewhere, say something to my community. We might not have been aware but it is time to be aware now. To my clients, please know I am the eyebrow lady you can talk to about anything in a time where this is a lot being said. Know that I understand now that I was able to come to this country with my children because of the work done and noise made by brave Black Americans and I want to do all I can to make it clear that Black Lives Matter.
Here are a few things we are doing:
1. First, we watched Hasan Minhaj's 12-minute explanation of how the Asian community cannot sit silent and must actively support the BLM movement
2. We called our Congressman (Brad Schneider) to ask him to support the end of Qualified Immunity for police officers. 8473834879
