Sorprendente que alguna vez el territorio fuera casi tres veces más grande de lo que actualmente conocemos, y esto se debe a que no sólo parte occidente de Estados Unidos, sino también toda la región de Centroamérica pertenecía al antiguo imperio de la Nueva España, posterior a la Independencia, al Imperio Mexicano.
