I'm going to be honest about something. 🤍
For a long time, I colored my hair. And for a long time, I told myself it was a choice that I liked the color, that it was just maintenance, that it didn't mean anything.
But if I'm being real? A lot of it was fear. Fear of what gray meant. Fear of how I'd be perceived. Fear of looking older in an industry where youth gets a lot of attention.
The day I decided to stop was the day I realized I was spending significant time, money, and chemical exposure trying to hide something completely natural. Something my body was doing on its own timeline, for its own reasons.
Stopping wasn't instant confidence. It was a process. The grow-out phase is uncomfortable. People notice. They comment. Some of them mean well, and some of them don't.
But on the other side of it? I genuinely love what I see. And I've never felt more aligned with what I teach my clients every single day… That your natural hair, in its natural state, is enough. More than enough.
If you're thinking about making the transition, our team is here to help you do it on your terms. 💛

Here's the honest truth about going gray: genetics loads the gun. Lifestyle pulls the trigger. 💛
If your mom or dad went gray in their 30s, there's a strong chance you will too. The age at which your melanocytes start slowing down is largely written into your DNA, and no amount of green juice is going to change that timeline significantly.
But lifestyle absolutely influences the process. Research consistently links these factors to earlier or more rapid graying:
🔸 Chronic stress depletes melanocyte stem cells over time 🔸 Smoking is linked to premature graying by up to 2.5x in some studies 🔸 Nutritional deficiencies, particularly B12, iron, copper, and folate 🔸 Oxidative stress, poor sleep, poor diet, and high inflammation all contribute
You may not be able to stop gray from coming. But you can influence how fast it gets there and, more importantly, how healthy your hair is when it does.
Gray doesn't have to mean damaged, dry, or dull. Especially when it's in Locs. 🌿

Short answer: yes. And the science behind it is actually wild. 🧠🤍
For years, this was written off as an old wives' tale. Then researchers at Harvard actually studied it, and what they found was significant. When your body is under intense stress, it triggers the release of norepinephrine, which causes melanocyte stem cells to activate too quickly and migrate out of the follicle permanently.
Translation: stress depletes the very cells responsible for giving your hair its color, and once they're gone from that follicle, they don't come back.
This doesn't mean every gray hair is stress-related. Genetics still plays the biggest role. But if you've noticed a sudden increase in grays during a particularly hard season of life, your body wasn't lying to you.
Take care of your nervous system. Your hair is paying attention. 💛

We’re going to be real with you, because that’s what we do. 💛
The number one thing that derails new SisterLocks™ clients? Expecting their Locs to look “done” before they’re actually done.
Social media is full of beautiful, mature, polished Loc photos. And it’s easy to forget that those Locs took years to look that way. When your own Locs are in the budding or teenage stage, fuzzy, a little unpredictable, not what you imagined, it can feel like something went wrong.
Nothing went wrong. Your hair is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.
Other mistakes we see in the early stages:
🔸 Manipulating Locs too much (twisting, re-parting, touching constantly)
🔸 Using the wrong products because someone online recommended them
🔸 Going to a different stylist mid-process and disrupting the grid
🔸 Not communicating concerns to your Loctician, we need to know what’s happening!
Your consultant is your partner in this. Lean on us. Ask questions. Show up to your appointments. We’ve got you every step of the way. 🙌

We’re sharing this because we’ve seen it happen, we care, and a little knowledge up front saves a lot of heartbreak later. 💛
Here are the most common mistakes we see new SisterLocks™ clients make, and how to avoid them:
❌ Skipping or delaying retightening appointments
Your Locs need consistent maintenance to lock properly. Missing appointments compounds quickly and can cause slippage and uneven locking.
❌ Loading Locs with heavy oils and products
Your new Locs don’t need products, they need to lock. Heavy butters and oils coat the hair shaft and slow that process down significantly.
❌ Washing too early after install
Your Locs need time to settle before their first wash. Ask your consultant for the right timeline for your hair.
❌ Comparing your progress to someone else online
Everyone’s hair texture, density, and locking speed are different. Someone on YouTube is not your hair’s blueprint.
❌ Giving up during the teenage stage
This is the hardest stage, but it’s also temporary. Trust the process and trust your Loctician.
Our team is here to walk you through every step so you don’t have to learn these the hard way. 🙌

Ever wonder what's actually happening inside your hair when it goes gray? It's not random… It's biology. 🤍
Every hair follicle contains cells called melanocytes. Their entire job is to produce melanin, the pigment that gives your hair its color. Over time, those melanocytes slow down and eventually stop producing melanin altogether. When a strand grows in without pigment? It comes in transparent, which, as we now know, reads as gray or silver.
It's a gradual process. Some follicles stop producing melanin earlier than others, which is why graying usually happens in patches before it spreads. And once a follicle stops? The color doesn't come back on its own.
There's nothing wrong with your hair when it goes gray. It's simply doing what hair does. The real question is what you do with it next. 💛

One of the most common conversations we have during consultations: “What size should my Locs be?” And the honest answer is, it depends. 💛
Here’s a breakdown of what each size actually means for your hair and your life:
🔹 SMALL LOCS
More Locs across your head, which means more versatility in styling. Installs take longer, and retightening sessions can too. Often preferred for those who want a finer, more delicate look. Best for medium to high density hair.
🔸 MEDIUM LOCS
The most popular choice for a reason, it’s the sweet spot between install time, retightening ease, and styling options. Works beautifully across a wide range of hair types.
🔷 LARGE LOCS
Bold, statement-making, and faster to install. Fewer Locs overall, but each one is more substantial. Works best for thin, thicker, denser hair. Retightening is typically quicker.
The right size for you isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about what works with your hair density, texture, and the lifestyle you actually live.

Gray Locs are some of the most stunning Locs we’ve ever worked on. And the clients who wear them? Absolutely radiant. ✨
But we believe in honesty over hype, so if you’re considering starting Locs and you have significant gray, here’s what our team wants you to know:
Gray hair behaves differently at every stage of the Loc process. During installation, the grid has to be mapped more carefully because the texture variation between gray and pigmented strands can affect how sections sit and hold. During the locking process, gray sections may take noticeably longer to lock down. During reties, your stylist needs to pay close attention to how the gray root is interacting with the rest of the Loc.
None of this is a dealbreaker. It’s just information. And having that information means you can choose the right stylist, set the right expectations, and enjoy the journey without unnecessary frustration.
We’d love to be that team for you. 💛 Book your consultation at finegoldlocs.com. Link in bio!

Let’s talk about something we don’t see discussed enough: gray hair and Locs. ✨💛
We work with a number of clients who are navigating their natural grays, and we want to be upfront about what makes this specific experience unique, because it genuinely is.
Here’s what gray hair does differently:
🔸 Gray strands tend to be coarser, dryer, and more resistant than pigmented hair
🔸 This texture variation can make creating a consistent, even grid significantly more challenging
🔸 Gray hair often takes longer to lock and may feel “slippery” during the early stages
🔸 Reties require extra attention because the gray strands may behave differently at the root than the rest of the Loc
None of this means you can’t or shouldn’t have Locs. It means you need a Loctician with experience in working with gray hair specifically, not someone who treats every head the same.
Our team has that experience, and we love the beauty that comes from working with a full, silver head of Locs. 🙌
