Your dark spots keep coming back because your breakouts never really stopped. 👀

You can spend hundreds on brightening serums, chemical peels, and dark spot correctors, but if your skin is constantly dealing with new breakouts and inflammation, you’re fighting a losing battle.

Here’s what most people don’t understand about acne and hyperpigmentation on Black skin.

Every inflamed breakout has the potential to trigger excess melanin production, leaving behind post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) that can last months after the pimple disappears.

And here’s where people get it wrong.

They focus on fading the discoloration while ignoring what’s creating it.

The solution isn’t always a stronger brightening product. It’s a smarter treatment strategy.

✔️ Control the acne — Reduce the frequency of new breakouts so you’re not constantly creating new dark spots.

✔️ Calm the inflammation — Irritation can worsen pigmentation, especially in melanin-rich skin.

✔️ Correct the discoloration — Once the skin is more stable, ingredients like tranexamic acid, kojic acid, and niacinamide can help target uneven skin tone.

✔️ Protect your progress — Daily sunscreen helps prevent existing pigmentation from getting darker while your skin heals.

This is why an effective acne treatment for Black skin must address more than pimples. It needs to account for inflammation, skin barrier health, and the cycle of dark spots left behind by acne.

Because clear skin isn’t just about getting rid of the breakout. It’s about preventing the next breakout from leaving another mark.

Your makeup isn’t the problem. Your cleanser is.

If your foundation looks dry, cakey, or settles into fine lines by noon, look at what you’re washing your face with. Bar soap and harsh foaming cleansers strip your skin’s moisture barrier. Your face feels “squeaky clean,” but it’s actually dehydrated, and makeup grabs onto every dry patch.

In your late 30s, your skin makes less oil and holds less water than it did in your 20s. Stripping it every morning and night makes that worse.

The fix:

→ Swap soap for a hydrating cleanser that cleans without stripping

→ Follow with moisture while your skin is still damp

→ Let your skin hydrate before you apply makeup
Hydrated skin is smooth skin, and smooth skin is what lets makeup glide on instead of sitting on top.

Still using soap on your face? Be honest in the comments.

If you’re going to treat yourself, make it worth it. A good Bonbonerie dessert, a really good cookie, the real thing. That’s how I think about breakouts and sugar too.

Research on high-glycemic foods and acne points to a possible link, but not a simple one. One treat doesn’t make you break out. What shows up on your skin is the pattern: sugary snacks every day, little sleep, and stress that keeps your hormones up.

So here’s my approach as an esthetician who works with adult and hormonal acne every day:

•Pick your indulgences on purpose, not out of habit
•Keep your routine consistent, especially on the days you indulge
•Drink your water and wash your face at night. Every night.
•Stop picking. Leave it to your esthetician 😉

Clear skin doesn’t mean being perfect. It means being consistent.

GLP-1 skin is real. Here’s your routine fix.

You started a GLP-1, the weight came off, and now your face looks flat, dry and dull. Losing weight was the goal. Losing your glow wasn’t.

When the body changes quickly, the skin often can’t keep up. Rapid weight loss can mean less volume and fullness in the face, which can make skin look thinner, less plump and less elastic. Many people on Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound also notice their skin feels tighter, drier and more dehydrated than before. The routine that worked at your old weight may not be giving your skin what it needs now.

Here’s where to start:

1. Switch to a hydrating cleanser. Harsh, stripping cleansers make dryness worse. A gentle, hydrating formula cleans without taking away the moisture your skin is already short on.

2. Use a moisturizer that plumps. Look for hydrators and barrier-supporting ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides and peptides. They help skin hold onto water and look fuller and smoother, which matters when the face has lost volume.

3. Wear sunscreen every day, all year. UV damage breaks down collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm. Daily SPF protects the elasticity you have and helps prevent dark spots and uneven tone.

Your body changed, so your skincare has to change with it. Hydration, barrier support and sun protection make up the foundation of a GLP-1 skincare routine.

Athletes, your skincare routine should be part of your training routine, too.

If you’re constantly working out, practicing, or sweating, what stays on your skin after the workout matters.

Sweat + repeated cleansing + not replacing hydration can leave your skin feeling dehydrated and disrupt the skin barrier. And when your barrier isn’t functioning at its best, you may start noticing more irritation, congestion and breakouts.

That’s why a good skincare routine for athletes doesn’t need to be complicated.

Start with:

-A hydrating cleanser to remove sweat, oil and buildup without over-stripping
-A hydrating moisturizer to replenish the moisture your skin is repeatedly losing
-Consistent cleansing after workouts instead of allowing sweat to sit on the skin

And if you have acne-prone skin, don’t make the mistake of trying to dry your breakouts out. Your skin can be oily, acne-prone and dehydrated at the same time.

Train hard. Sweat hard. But don’t forget about your skin. 🤎

You don’t need a 10-step skincare routine. You need the right routine for your skin.

One of the biggest skincare mistakes I see is thinking more products = better results. It doesn’t.

A strong simple skincare routine starts with the basics:

•A cleanser that cleans without stripping your skin
•A moisturizer that supports your skin barrier yes, even if you have oily skin
•A broad-spectrum sunscreen you’ll actually wear every day

And let’s clear up another myth: Black skin and skin of color absolutely need sunscreen. Melanin offers some natural protection, but it does not prevent sun damage or skin cancer. And if you’re dealing with hyperpigmentation and dark spots, skipping sunscreen can make that pigmentation harder to correct.

Healthy skin isn’t about using the most products. It’s about using the right skincare products consistently.

Save this if you’re trying to build a simple skincare routine for Black skin, oily skin, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, or healthy skin — and send it to someone who still thinks oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer.

Dark spots keep coming back? It may not be because your products aren’t working. Your skin could still be getting the signal to produce more pigment.

One of the biggest mistakes I see when treating hyperpigmentation and dark spots is focusing only on fading the pigment you can already see.

Effective hyperpigmentation treatment needs to address BOTH:

-The excess pigment your skin is still producing
-The existing pigment you’re trying to clear

Ingredients like azelaic acid, kojic acid and tranexamic acid can help interrupt or reduce the signals that contribute to excess pigment production.

But blocking those signals doesn’t automatically clear the pigment that’s already there.

That’s where Radiant Renewal A, our retinol treatment, comes in. Retinol helps increase skin-cell turnover, helping existing discoloration move through the skin more efficiently while improving overall tone and texture.

This matters even more when treating hyperpigmentation in Black skin and skin of color, where acne, inflammation and irritation can continue triggering new pigment.

So if you’re dealing with stubborn dark spots, acne marks, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or uneven skin tone, don’t just ask:

“How do I fade this spot?”

Ask: “What’s causing my skin to keep producing pigment?”

Control what’s being produced + clear what’s already there.

That’s the strategy. 🤎

SAVE this if you’re working on stubborn hyperpigmentation.

If you’re a woman in your 40s dealing with dark spots, melasma, or post-acne hyperpigmentation, the problem usually isn’t your products. It’s the order you’re using them in.

Here’s the routine, no guessing:
→ Dark spots and uneven tone? Toned Brightening Serum. This is your pigment corrector.

→ Not fading fast enough? Radiant Renewal A in the evening. Retinol speeds up cell turnover so pigment moves up and out instead of sitting there for months.

→ Dull, dry, tired-looking skin? Radiant Renewal C in the morning. Vitamin C brightens and shields against the free radical damage that keeps making new pigment.

And the part most of you skip: all three with no SPF is throwing your money away. Every single morning, reapplied. No exceptions.

Skin in your 40s isn’t harder to treat — it just doesn’t forgive inconsistency the way it did at 25. Same three products, same order, 12 weeks. That’s how you get results.

Which step have you been skipping? Tell me below.

You did the hard part. You tracked it, you narrowed it down, you know exactly what your skin reacts to. And then you ate it anyway — and wondered why you were still breaking out.

Identifying an acne trigger is data. Removing it is treatment. Those are two different things, and only one of them clears your skin.
Here is the part nobody tells you: week four is where people quit. Not because it stopped working — because it started working slowly.

Inflammation calms before the texture changes, so it feels like nothing is happening right when everything is. Quitting at week four is the real trigger.

If you are breaking out on the same foods and the same cycle every month, you do not need a stronger product. You need a protocol and someone watching it with you.

Let’s tackle this together.
