Extreme independence is often due to someone growing up learning that sadly, they could only count on themselves and/or they we're taught not to be a "burden" to others. It can also be about control because they did not have a lot of control growing up. Whatever reason this behavior can be unlearned, given the right circumstances, safety, and trust.
