Just a heads up to my clients that I will be out of the salon 5/1-5/11 for my birthday…I’ll return on Mother’s Day and will be out again from 6/5-6/13 and back to work June 14th… space and time is limited for remaining appointments during these next 6-8 weeks. The darker the hair the more melanin … this is the same with skin tones …

There are two types of melanin in the hair:

Eumelanin: the more of this, the more brown, black or red the hair will be.
Pheomelanin: the more of this, the more orange to yellow the hair will be depending on depth.

Therefore even if your hair is already naturally grey or even white, bleaching it will still reveal gold tones …

There are also other factors that affect the outcome of any lightening or bleaching services…
- previous color services
- medications
- stress on the body from illness, work, death of a loved one or pet, can also alter how our hair reacts to the chemical process
- buildup of mineral deposits on the hair
- buildup of silicones from products on the hair (not saying they are all bad or don’t have their place in the hair world, but this is an added factor into the science behind the lightening process)
- chlorine either from swimming or chlorimine which is approved to treat our water nationwide
CHLORINE AND CHLORAMINE ARE THE MAJOR DISINFECTANTS USED IN PUBLIC WATER SYSTEMS. Most communities use either chlorine or chloramines. Some communities switch back and forth between chlorine and chloramines at different times of the year or for other operational reasons. Less commonly, utilities use other disinfectants, such as chlorine dioxide. Some water systems that use water from a groundwater source (like community wells) do not have to add a disinfectant at all.
This is the reason you can sometimes smell that funny chemical Odor coming from your faucets… having a traditional water softener system installed or even a shower head with added filtration can assist in keeping your hair color, skin healthier, and even your pets safer from drinking this stuff… (I know from personal experience and a 2k overnight er vet bill just how toxic this can be to our fur kids)

I’ve also included a natural remaining pigment chart in this post, and a chart showing how we use the basic color wheel to counteract these tones ..

For example if you wanted to be an icy level 10 blonde yet forgot to mention to your stylist that at one point you did have your hair colored…
We would assume your hair is virgin aka untouched, unaltered by intentional chemicals and go about our service …
When you then lift to a pale blonde from your regrowth to maybe 4-5 inches down then have a banding of red or pink…. Well this is how we know you weren’t telling the truth or had maybe forgotten about that temp wash you decided to try out for funsies with your niece a year ago… and this is why we would use a toner with a green base to cancel it out..

I’m not going to break down the basics of the color wheel for you because it’s a bit tedious . But I hope this general information helps anyone reading this post understand a bit better why we do what we do and ask the questions we do during our consultations.

Side note : I DO NOT PERFORM KERATIN, BRAZILIAN BLOWOUTS, OR RELAXERS DUE TO THE CANCER CAUSING INGREDIENTS REQUIRED FOR THEM TO WORK, I am allergic to them myself and it’s against my personal beliefs to perform them on clients who may have an unknown reaction to the aldehydes that are inhaled during the process…
