Hello, to whom it may concern. My name is Reina and I’m the owner of Beauty Mafia Salon and spa here in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. I’ve been In the cosmetology industry for over 35 years and currently a State board Examiner in the field of cosmetology, nail technology, aesthetics and barbering.
I do have to say that I am extremely concerned with the learning hours being lowered for cosmetology licensing from 1600 hours to 1000 hours. At this point in time, it is extremely difficult for the students who have 1600hours to pass their test.
In my salon after you pass your test and are licensed you have to do three years of training on the floor before you can have your own station. This is a very serious industry and needs to be taken seriously. There are numerous different types of haircuts which require difficult angles and shapes. As well as numerous types of color which require peroxide, ammonia, and bleach. Everybody is different and every client wants something different. I would hope that we strive for knowledge when we have sharp scissors in our hand and chemicals that can burn and blind clients. Let alone the anxiety and stress it puts on new students coming into the field.
I see firsthand the difficulty it takes to do a haircut. These skills that they learn, take hours and HOURS of repetition in order to master. It is not something that you can do one time and figure out. It takes years to master the craft of cosmetology. It would be absolutely detrimental to the Student who has to cram multiple facets of cosmetology into 1000 hours. There is absolutely no time to master any of the skills it takes to be a successful hairdresser let alone pass the test. It would be setting our students up for
failure period! As well as our schools.
