"Are you baffled by your moody, irritable kid and wondering how to help them manage their emotions?"
If you answered yes, then know that you are not alone!
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 31.9% of adolescents struggle with some form of anxiety disorder.
As a parent-teacher, I witness the growing number of students grappling with these challenges daily. It’s disheartening to see how deeply anxiety impacts our young people, affecting their emotional well-being, academic performance, and social connections.
My son, you see was diagnosed with ADHD in the fifth grade. He struggles with overthinking, a lot, which often causes restlessness, excessive worrying and irritable mood swings.
Just last night before bed, I noticed something different with him, I asked was he okay? He replied, "I'm good".
Because I do not believe in pressuring my kiddos to talk to me, I reassured him that I was here for him, just in case he realizes he was NOT in fact, 'good'. I told him that I loved him and bid him a good night.
My spirit led me to feel something more and one thing I can tell you about my kids is that they know that I can read them quite well. I'd decided to send him an encouraging text before I prayed and headed off to bed.
In essence I reminded him that comparison and competition were the main thieves of joy. And joy unlike happiness was not fleeting but could be felt even in the most daring circumstance, but the key to joy was gratitude.
Gratitude, I told him helps to release him of the past and pulls his head out of the future, keeping his thoughts on the present, what is right in front of him - a family that loves him, a job that he loves, and warm, kind, home.
My son has struggled with symptoms like overthinking, lack of concentration, since he was fifth grade, which often causes restlessness, excessive worrying and irritable mood swings.
But God!
Just as I was about to round third base and head towards home plate, into a deep, comfy sleep, I heard my text notification alert. I reached over and read it, "thanks MoM, you always know what to say to keep me grounded, love you❤️❤️."
THERE IS HOPE!!
Encouraging our kiddos to focus on what they’re thankful for, even in small ways, shifts their mindset toward positivity. Gratitude helps to ground them, providing a sense of calm and perspective amid anxious thoughts.
We may not be able to eliminate anxiety completely, but with patience and proactive strategies, we can help our adolescents build resilience and manage their emotions in healthier ways.

As educators, we’re trained to support our students' emotional well-being, yet it’s different when your own is child facing those same struggles.
Patience, empathy, and small steps make all the difference. We must create safe spaces for our kiddos to express themselves without pressure. Some days will be harder than others, but progress is still progress—no matter how small.
Just today, as I was sitting at my desk, I received an email from my daughter title, "your daughter needs you". As I read through her email, first, I took a deep breath, and then with care and calmness, I helped her to push through her moment.
By the sound of the bell, she came to my room (because either she wanted to put eyes on me or knew that I needed to put eyes on her). Either way the reassurance that "all was well" was a must.
Honestly it was nothing really major that was bothering her, but it was worth the time and patience that we both put into getting her back a calmer mental and emotional place of self.
Supporting a child with social anxiety takes time and patience, but with guidance, we can help our kiddos build the tools and confidence they need to thrive.
P.S. ... and this is my WHY🥰!!!!!

Embracing Balance this October!! 🍂💛
Taking time for self-care, managing emotions, and practicing patience allows us to be more present for our families and ourselves.
Let’s remember to breathe, reflect, and show ourselves the same kindness we extend to others. This month, let’s set the intention to nurture both our minds and hearts as we juggle our many roles.
Here’s to a month of growth, balance, and connection! 🌟

The emotional tug-of-war between providing stability and pursuing your passion can be overwhelming. But remember, your emotional well-being matters too. When we’re unhappy or unfulfilled, it spills into other areas of our lives, impacting not just us but our kiddos as well.
Sometimes the right decision isn’t easy, but it’s the one that leads to growth, both for you and your family.
Remember you deserve to thrive, not just survive!

We all have those days, right?
This morning someone asked, how do you nurture your mind and body while balancing the demands of being both a parent and a teacher?"
I said,
"OoooooWeeee this is theeeee question!"
LBVS ... often times, the idea of self-care seems quite distant from both our hearts and minds. Just yesterday, I had to force myself to sit down and take a moment to decompress - to ease out of my teacher role and into my wife/MoM role. However, in the midst of that transition, I told my family that I just needed a few moments to myself - to breath.
So, I sat outside on the porch; watched the traffic; walked to the mailbox; and vented to the doggies like they were human, understanding what I was saying.
As parent-teachers, we’re often so busy caring for others that we forget to nurture the connection between our own mind and body. A strong and healthy mindset is key to staying balanced and energized, both in the classroom and at home.
And, I thought that I would share with you some other tips that I find helpful to strengthen my mind and body connection through positive self-talking and hopeful thinking:
✨ Start with Gratitude: Focusing on what you're thankful for can shift your mindset and keep you grounded.
✨ Visualize Success: Picture yourself thriving as both a parent and teacher, and let that vision fuel your motivation.
✨ Positive Affirmations: Speak words of encouragement over yourself. Simple phrases like “I am capable” or “I can handle this” make a big difference.
✨ Stay Active: Movement clears your mind and recharges your body—whether it's a short walk or a quick stretch between lessons.
✨ Breathe: Deep, mindful breaths calm the mind and help you reset.
Taking care of yourself is crucial for taking care of everyone else. When you fuel your mind with hope and positivity, you fuel your body with the strength to keep going. 💪

It's not just about being the smartest person in the room ...
Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best: “Character is higher than intellect. A great soul will be strong to live as well as to think.” In a world that values achievement, it’s our duty to ensure we nurture character—kindness, integrity, and empathy—in the hearts of the next generation.
Let’s commit to fostering not just great minds, but great hearts.
