The barber pole has history dating back to the days when barbers were more than haircutters—they were also surgeons and dentists.

In medieval Europe, barber-surgeons performed tasks such as bloodletting, pulling teeth, treating wounds, and even minor surgeries. During bloodletting, the patient would squeeze a wooden staff to make the veins more visible. Afterward, the blood-soaked bandages were washed and hung outside to dry.

Over time, the symbols of the trade became:

* Red = blood
* White = bandages
* Pole = the wooden staff patients gripped

When these bandages wrapped around the pole in the wind, they created the familiar spiral pattern.

Later, especially in the United States, a blue stripe was added. There are several theories about why:

* To represent veins alongside the red arteries.
* To honor the colors of the American flag.
* To distinguish American barber poles from European ones.

Today, the barber pole remains one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. Even though barbers no longer perform surgery, the spinning red, white, and blue pole is a reminder of a trade that has served communities for centuries.
