Picking a hairstylist is hard! There are so many good options out there and sometimes we get FOMO on who else could be out there! Don’t take your stylist for granted! If they are hitting all these check marks, you have a gem!

1. They listen to you during your consultation and offer solutions to each one of your challenges. They don’t shove products or services down your throat, rather they customize each experience with services that are right for you!
2. They care about the integrity of your hair first! It might be fun to have a stylist who never says no, but after a few months you’ll be sad when your hair is breaking! A stylist who says “no” once in a while, and who makes trims and treatments mandatory is someone you want doing your hair!
3. They are excited about everything hair! If your stylist hasn’t been to a class or a show in 5 years, what are you doing?! There are stylists straight out of school who can kick my ass! Your stylist should be staying up to date and inspired about their work!! It will reflect beautifully on your hair and likely make your experience more fun!
4. You feel comfortable and pampered at the salon every single time. CONSISTENCY is the number one factor in guest retention. Are you satisfied every time? Does your stylist treat every visit like the first visit? Do they have your color mixed before you arrive? A good stylist will never take you for granted and always make you feel heard and valued!
5. Most importantly, does your stylist accept feedback well? If you’re unsure or unhappy, do you feel comfortable telling them? If the answer is no, there is no trust there! During my consultations when I was behind the chair this was my dialogue to every new guest, “Sally, I know we just met but I want you to know my priority is that you are 100% happy. I take nothing personally and if you ever need anything before your appointment please call me so I can make it right! You deserve to be happy from the time you leave until the time you come back!”
A stylist/client relationship is built on trust, respect and support. If you have a gem, take care of them the way they take care of you! Thoughts?
