Why acidic permanent color doesn’t work for this trick 🧪

A little chemistry lesson for my fellow stylists 👀

When I use permanent clear + 20 volume to help remove certain vivid pigments, the chemistry is relying on an alkaline environment.

Alkaline products help swell the hair and increase cuticle permeability, allowing the oxidative formula to pe*****te and interact with those deposited color molecules.

Acidic permanent color works differently.

An acidic system helps keep the cuticle more compact rather than opening it up the way an alkaline system does.

So if you’re trying to use the clear + 20 technique, an acidic permanent color system isn’t going to give you the same mechanism.

It’s not about the word “permanent.”

It’s about pH, cuticle behavior, and the chemistry of what you’re trying to move.

And remember: this technique isn’t a universal color remover. If pigment has actually stained the hair, you may only be able to reduce the intensity—not make it disappear completely.

Hair color is chemistry. Know what’s in the bowl before you start mixing. 🧪

One of my favorite tricks for removing stubborn vivid pigments: permanent clear + 20 volume.

Instead of reaching for bleach, this can help push the vivid pigment out of the hair while the permanent dye molecules take up that space. 👀

And here’s the important part: bleach isn’t always the answer for vivid removal. With certain pigments, lightening the hair can actually make the remaining pigment look lighter, brighter, and even more vibrant instead of removing it.

BUT — this trick has a limit.

If the vivid has actually stained the cuticle, permanent clear + 20 volume won’t make that staining disappear. It may make the overall color look lighter and less intense, but the stain can still remain.

So before you automatically reach for lightener, ask yourself:
Am I removing pigment… or just making the hair underneath lighter? 🖤
