As we head further into fall, egg production should be slowing down, but apparently nobody told my girls!Over 100 eggs in just TWO days! I’m starting to wonder if I’ve unlocked some secret to chicken keeping! Both of our flocks are happy, healthy, and absolutely thriving! Between their warm morning oatmeal, fresh food, plenty of love, and being ridiculously spoiled, I guess happy hens really do lay happy eggs!Feeling incredibly blessed! Now, if someone could just keep them from finding out winter is coming!

🌳🍂 WELL, LOOK WHAT WE HARVESTED TODAY! 🍂🌳
A whole 5-GALLON BUCKET full of goodies straight from a tree right here on our homestead! 🪣🌰
Now, we have TWO questions for y’all!
🌰 QUESTION #1: Do you know what these are?
🤔 QUESTION #2: Can you guess what our plans are for the rest of the day?!
Let’s just say Mother Nature has been keeping us BUSY, and the work is just getting started! 😂
👇 Drop your guesses in the comments! Bonus points if you know what we have to do before we can actually enjoy these little treasures!
Life at Field & Flour Homestead is never boring, especially during harvest season! 🍁
🌾🐓 WAKE UP ON THE FARM WITH FIELD & FLOUR HOMESTEAD! 🐓🌾
Good morning from the homestead! ☀️🍂
It’s a crisp 48° this morning, and your favorite farm girl decided to sleep in a little! 😂 Since I have the morning off, we’re getting a slightly later start. If you happen to catch me outside in my cute little pajamas at 6:40 AM, just mind your business. Farm chores don’t require a dress code! 🤣
🥣 First up, fresh, warm oatmeal for the chickens!
Our girls absolutely LOVE their morning oatmeal! During these chilly mornings, a little plain, warm oatmeal makes a wonderful occasional treat. Oats provide carbohydrates for energy, and serving them warm gives the flock something cozy to enjoy. Just remember, oatmeal is a treat, not a replacement for their balanced feed!
And guess what? We’re STILL collecting eggs! 🥚 Even with these cooler temperatures, our girls are keeping the breakfast business running!
🐣 Next up, some one-on-one time with the babies!
Every morning, I spend a little extra time with our younger chickens. Hand-raising a friendly flock takes patience, consistency, and lots of love! Getting them comfortable with my voice, hands, and presence helps build trust. There’s nothing quite like having chickens that come running when they see you!
🐕 Then it’s time for the pups!
Everybody gets breakfast, including a little coconut oil and some other goodies mixed into their food. Coconut oil provides fat and calories, so we only use small amounts as part of their overall diet.
Of course, we can’t forget the morning ZOOMIES! 😂
My right-hand girl, Rosemary, is always riding alongside me for farm chores. She listens about 93% of the time, which, let’s be serious, is pretty impressive for a dog! 🤣
Unlike Willow and Sage, who have unfortunately discovered the excitement of traveling across the road, Rosemary generally stays close to me. But that doesn’t mean I ever take my eyes off her! Dogs will be dogs, and keeping my babies safe will ALWAYS come first. ❤️
🐰 And we can’t forget our Golden Girls!
Fresh Timothy hay, their regular food, and plenty of fresh water for our sweet rabbits! Everybody on this homestead starts the morning with a full belly and fresh water.
🌿 Farm life isn’t always glamorous.
Sometimes it’s muddy boots, messy hair, pajamas at sunrise, chicken p**p, and dogs running around like they’ve completely lost their minds. 😂
But there’s something so peaceful about starting the morning surrounded by animals who depend on you.
Some mornings are rushed because I’m heading off to work by 7:30. Other mornings, like today, I get to slow down, enjoy my coffee-free morning, and spend a little extra time with everyone.
And those slower mornings? They’re some of my favorites. ❤️
🍂 “The best things in life aren’t always glamorous. Sometimes they’re covered in feathers, fur, and a little bit of farm dirt.”
Happy Thursday from our little corner of Indiana! 🌾🐓
A morning off means a little extra time in the coop with the crew.
This morning, the boys decided we needed a full-blown cock-a-doodle-doo competition… and it went on for almost an HOUR. Apparently everyone needed to make sure the whole homestead knew exactly who was awake.
One of our younger roosters is just starting to really crow, and his little voice is still finding itself. It’s slightly scratchy, a little awkward, and honestly the cutest thing ever. Young roosters often start out with some pretty funny, squeaky, raspy, or incomplete crows while they learn to use their voice. With time, that little scratchy crow will usually turn into a much stronger, more confident cock-a-doodle-doo.
The other two? Seasoned professionals at this point. 😂
We spent the rest of the morning just relaxing in the coop, hanging out with the girls and reminding everybody that we’re friends. There’s something special about sitting quietly with your flock and letting them choose to come hang out with you.
Nothing fancy this morning—just chickens, scratchy rooster vocals, and a slow morning at Field & Flour. 🤎🐓
It’s a crisp 49° morning here at Field & Flour Homestead!
What do you do for your girls when the temperatures start dropping? This morning, ours got warm oatmeal to warm their bellies and some fresh worms.
On colder days, we also add a little extra protein and healthy fats to their diet, along with things like sunflower seeds and mealworms, to give them extra energy for staying warm. And, of course, plenty of fresh water and a dry, draft-protected coop.
Cold mornings just mean a little extra love for the flock.
One of the best parts of my day is just sitting down with these sweet babies. You don’t always need treats in your hands to build a friendly flock—sometimes they just need your time.
Sit with them. Talk to them. Let the hens wander around you and the roosters settle in close. Trust is built in the quiet moments.
“A friendly flock starts with simply showing up.”

We are officially SWIMMING in eggs over here at Field & Flour! 🥚😂
There’s just something so exciting about walking out to the coop every day and gathering fresh eggs from our own girls. I don’t think that feeling will ever get old. 🤎🐓
