In Massachusetts, the eerie remains of the “Ashintully” mansion make for one of the most haunting but still beautiful places you can explore in the state. Also known as the “Titus Mansion Ruins,” this site still has four huge columns standing tall, looking out over the rolling hills just like they did when the mansion once stood here. When you visit, you are standing on the exact spot where a large Georgian-style home was built between 1910 and 1912 by Robb dePeyster Tytus in the small hill town of Tyringham. People in the area once called it the “Marble Palace” because of its bright white stucco that stood out across the land. The home had 35 rooms before it was destroyed by a major fire in 1952. Today, parts of the place still remain, including the front terrace, the stone foundation, and those four tall Doric columns that have become the most well-known part of the ruins. The ruins now sit within well-kept land that is part of the McLennan Reservation, owned and cared for by The Trustees of Reservations. As you walk around, you will find simple paths, old trees, stone walls, and wide views of the Berkshires all around you. It is a quiet place where you can take your time, look around, and get a real feel for both the history of the site and the natural beauty that surrounds it.

The nine hour spontaneous drive to the Nebraska border was absolutely worth it. Pink and green auroras, filling the sky, visible to the naked eye...an absolutely historic night and one that isn't over yet. Feel free to share. Shot on the Nikon Z8 and NIKKOR Z 14-24mm lens.
