In the 1980s, Paul and Kris Scharaun met at a dance for people with disabilities. Kris wore a simple dress, but her smile lit up the room, while Paul, shy at first, couldn’t take his eyes off her.

Both had Down syndrome, but that night, there were no labels—just two young people drawn to each other. Their first dance was a little clumsy but full of laughter, marking the beginning of a love story that would last decades.

They spent years dating, enjoying trips, walks, and evenings watching NASCAR together. Paul was steady and protective, while Kris was outgoing and full of life. In 1988, they decided to marry. At the time, it was uncommon for two adults with Down syndrome to wed, and some even doubted Kris could be a wife. She proved them wrong.

They exchanged vows in a small church in upstate New York, surrounded by friends and family. Their marriage became one of the longest-lasting among couples with Down syndrome, enduring for more than 25 years. Together, they built a life of quiet joy—working in inclusive jobs, volunteering, and cherishing small rituals like mountain trips, homemade birthday cakes, and Kris leaving a Valentine’s card for Paul each year.

Their bond was later tested when Paul developed early-onset dementia. Kris, managing her own health challenges, became his devoted caretaker, offering comfort and familiarity in his changing world. Knowing their time together was limited, they renewed their vows in a quiet chapel, reaffirming the promise they had made decades earlier. Paul passed away a year later.

Kris, once told she would never marry or know happiness, instead experienced a love both ordinary and extraordinary. Their story is a reminder that true love knows no limits—whether of age, health, or circumstance. It’s simply two hearts brave enough to promise forever, and to honor that promise every day.
