Seiðr (pronounced "say-ther") is an ancient form of Norse magic and shamanism focused on manipulating fate and predicting the future.
Deeply rooted in Norse cosmology, its practices were fundamentally tied to the Web of Wyrd—the cosmic tapestry representing destiny woven by The Norns.
Unlike Galdr (spoken incantations or rune magic), Seiðr primarily relied on altered states of consciousness, spirit communication, and trance work.
Divine Origins & Deities✨
In Old Norse mythology, Seiðr was highly respected but carries a complex moral reputation. It is tied tightly to two major deities:~
*Freyja-
The Vanir goddess of love, fertility, and magic. Mythology states that she was the master practitioner who first taught Seiðr to the Aesir gods.
*Odin-
The chief god who undertook extreme lengths to master Seiðr to gain supreme hidden knowledge and foresight.
Core Practices & Functions✨
Practitioners altered reality by conceptually "weaving" or "unweaving" the threads of existence. The Sagas describe several distinct functions of this magic~
*Prophecy & Divination-
Foretelling future events, crops, or battles.
Trance states, reading natural signs, contacting spirits.
*Örlog (Shaping Fate)-
Altering or bending the course of destiny.
Ritual spinning using a symbolic distaff or staff.

The Völva ✨
The primary earthly practitioners of Seiðr were the völur (singular: völva), who were highly respected, wandering seeresses. They traveled between settlements during the winter to offer counsel to chieftains and kings.

A standard ritual typically required specific ceremonial elements-
*The Seiðstafur -
A heavy metal or wooden staff used to direct energy or symbolize a spinning distaff.
*The Seiðhjallr-
An elevated platform or scaffold that physicalized the practitioner's rise above the mundane world to gaze into the spiritual realm.
*Vardlöokur-
Sacred incantations or songs sung by a chorus of assistants to anchor the völva's soul while she journeyed in a trance state.
Gender Roles & Cultural Taboos✨
Seiðr was rigidly gendered in Viking Age society. Because weaving textiles was historically classified as domestic women’s work, manipulating the "threads" of fate was considered a strictly feminine art.
When men practiced Seiðr (with the exception of Odin), they crossed rigid social boundaries. These men were heavily stigmatized and accused of 'Ergi' (unmanliness or sexual passivity), which was one of the deepest insults in Old Norse culture.

Nature & Characteristics✨
Animistic essence*
Kami are not distant, almighty creators in the Western sense; they are holy presences living inside everyday nature.
Countless numbers*
Japanese tradition speaks of yaoyorozu no kami, meaning "eight million deities," which translates to an infinite, countless multitude.
Dual nature*
Kami can be gentle and nurturing—bringing good harvests and fine weather—or fierce and destructive, causing storms and earthquakes if ignored.
Moral neutrality*
They possess character and free will, displaying both good and bad traits rather than acting as absolute moral judges.

Amaterasu*
The great sun goddess and ancestral head of the imperial line.
Susanoo*
The volatile storm god and brother to Amaterasu.
Inari*
The protector spirit of rice, agriculture, and business prosperity, often represented alongside foxes.

Lughnasadh (pronounced LOO-nah-sah or LOO-nuh-suh)

* Origin: Ancient Irish Celtic festival.
* Date: Traditionally begins at sunset on July 31 and continues through August 1.
* Named for: The Celtic god Lugh, a master of many skills—warrior, craftsman, poet, king, and protector.
* Purpose: Lugh established the festival in honor of his foster mother, Tailtiu, who died after clearing Ireland’s forests so crops could be planted.
* Traditions included:
* Athletic games (the Tailteann Games, often compared to the ancient Olympics)
* Horse races
* Markets and fairs
* Handfastings (trial marriages)
* Music, storytelling, and feasting
* Giving thanks for the first harvest

The focus is on gratitude, skill, sacrifice, and the beginning of the harvest season.

Lammas

* Origin: Anglo-Saxon Christian England.
* Name meaning: “Loaf Mass” (“hlaf-mæsse” in Old English).
* Date: August 1.
* Purpose: Farmers baked the first loaf of bread from the new wheat harvest and brought it to church to be blessed.
* Traditions included:
* Baking bread
* Blessing the first grain
* Decorating with wheat and corn
* Sharing food with the community

The emphasis is on the grain harvest and giving thanks for abundance.

Modern Pagan and Wiccan Practice

Many modern witches celebrate both traditions together because they fall on the same day.

* Reflecting on what you’ve “grown” spiritually since Beltane. So basically Lughnasadh is the ancient Celtic festival honoring Lugh, community, sacrifice, and the first harvest. Lammas is the Christianized harvest celebration centered on blessing the first loaf of bread. Today, many modern witches honor both—celebrating the turning of the Wheel, expressing gratitude for the first harvest, and recognizing that every blessing comes from seeds planted through hard work and patience.
