Behind the Chair — Friday Edition
Today was a slower day at the barbershop, which usually means the conversations get a little deeper and last a little longer.
A lot of today’s talk centered around work, stress, and responsibility. Men carrying the pressure of providing. Worries about money, business slowing down, and the frustration of trying to find dependable help or contractors who actually return calls and do quality work anymore. Sometimes those conversations aren’t loud or dramatic — they just quietly surface while the clippers are running.
On the brighter side, there were plenty of conversations about the things that make life good too. Grandkids bringing joy in a way nothing else can. A husband and wife sharing stories from a 20-day cruise to Italy with incredible scenery and food. Folks laughing about how prices in Nashville somehow seem to double compared to back home in Tennessee.
There was also a lot of appreciation today for people who still believe in serving others. One conversation that really stuck with me was about a local church group that builds wheelchair ramps for people in need. Most of the volunteers are between 72 and 84 years old. One gentleman is still faithfully helping at 84, while the 89-year-old recently retired from the work. That says something powerful about purpose and community.
Another meaningful moment came from hearing someone proudly talk about being 37 days sober and the story behind it. You could hear hope in their voice. Those are the kinds of conversations you remember.
There were talks about Police Week and bucket-list trips, cattle farming in Tennessee, beef prices, and families preparing cemeteries for decoration weekend ahead of Memorial Day. Somewhere in the middle of it all was a really thoughtful conversation about introverts and extroverts and how differently people connect with the world around them.
The interesting thing about this job is how quickly a haircut turns into real life being shared across the chair. Some people come in needing to talk. Some need to laugh. Some just need a familiar place for a little while.
And days like today remind me that if you slow down long enough to truly listen, people will teach you something every single day.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Steve Vickers, age 69, who passed away Saturday, April 11, 2026. Steve was a longtime fixture at Vickers Barber Shop and proudly carried on the family tradition as the third generation of Vickers barbers. He spent more than 30 years behind the chair, working side by side with his father for much of that time.
Since COVID, Steve’s health had declined, but he remained a familiar and valued part of the shop and our community. He will be deeply missed by all of us at Vickers Barber Shop.
This Friday, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, we invite anyone who knew Steve, his father, or the Vickers family to stop by the barbershop to share memories, offer encouragement, and spend time together remembering his kindness.
