Tanning ( increased depositing of pigment parcels in the epidermal cells) is a defensive mechanism of the skin against UV damage (uva for aging and uvb for burning). It happens when the skin has detected damage already. Melanocytes get activated and start pumping more melanin. If you were to cause injury to the skin surface in any shape or form, the skin will respond with more pigment depositing in the injured area to protect it from further damage from UV. That's why client will develop hyperpigmentation if treated too soon after sun exposure.
