🐦 Bird of the Week: Red-bellied Woodpecker

If you’ve been watching your backyard feeders in Southeast Louisiana, chances are you’ve seen this striking visitor!

Despite its name, the Red-bellied Woodpecker actually gets its name from a faint reddish wash on its belly—which is often difficult to see. The brilliant red cap and nape are what really catch your eye.
This FeatherSnap visitor stopped by for one of its favorite treats… peanuts! 🥜

Did You Know?
🔴 Males have red from their forehead all the way to the back of the neck, while females have a gray forehead with red only on the back of the head.
🪵 They use their strong, chisel-like bills to dig insects out of tree bark but also enjoy peanuts, suet, sunflower seeds, and mealworms at backyard feeders.
🏡 Red-bellied Woodpeckers are year-round residents in Louisiana, making them one of our most common and colorful backyard birds.
🎶 Listen for their distinctive rolling “churr” call or the rhythmic drumming you’ll often hear echoing through the trees.

We love seeing these beautiful birds visit local FeatherSnap cameras! Have you spotted a Red-bellied Woodpecker in your backyard lately? Share your photos in the comments!

🌧️🐦 Rainy Days Are Bird Days! 🐦🌧️

Think the birds disappear when it rains? Think again!

A warm summer rain is one of the best things for our feathered friends. It helps them:
💦 Cool off after the Louisiana heat
🪶 Clean and condition their feathers
🐛 Find insects and other tasty treats that come out after the rain

This FeatherSnap camera captured these visitors braving the weather—a curious Blue Jay, a soaked young Northern Cardinal, and a brilliant adult male Cardinal stopping by for a meal. Even on rainy days, the feeder is still the place to be!

Keep your feeders filled year-round, rain or shine, and your backyard birds will thank you.

🐦 Bird of the Week: Blue Jay 💙

We had to revisit the Blue Jay because they're everywhere in Southeast Louisiana right now! If you've been watching your feeders or checking your backyard bird camera, chances are you've seen these bold, beautiful birds making quite an impression.

Here are a few fun facts about these backyard favorites:
💙 They're year-round residents in Southeast Louisiana.
🧠 Blue Jays are among the smartest birds in North America and belong to the crow family.
🥜 They love peanuts, black oil sunflower seeds, and suet.
🌳 They're nature's tree planters, helping grow oak trees by burying acorns.
🚨 Their loud calls warn other birds when predators are nearby.
🎭 They can even imitate hawks to keep other birds away from food.
👨‍👩‍👧 Both parents work together to raise their young.
📸 Their brilliant blue feathers and bold personalities make them one of the most photographed backyard birds.

Stop by Backyard Birds & Gardens for everything you need to keep your Blue Jays—and all your backyard birds—well fed and happy!

⏰ Just a reminder: We'll be closed for a little vacation beginning Saturday. Be sure to stop by before then to stock up on bird seed, feeders, and supplies so your feathered friends stay happy while we're away. We appreciate your support and can't wait to see you when we return! 💙🐦
