Hair extensions need a little extra love during the summer months.

Between the sun, lake days, pool water, beach trips, sunscreen, and sweat, your extensions go through a lot more than they do the rest of the year.

Unlike your natural hair, extensions aren't receiving nutrients from your scalp, which means they rely on you for hydration and protection.

A few summer reminders:

• Apply a water soluble oil to keep them hydrated
• Wear a bonnet if you're using a tanning bed
Apply a water soluble oil to keep them hydrated
• Be mindful of sunscreen and tanning lotions, especially on blonde extensions
• Braid your hair or secure it before swimming (try to avoid getting the extensions wet)
• Leave your conditioner on for 10 to 20 minutes

Would you believe me if I told you the only color I did was her root touch up?

Everything through her mids and ends is naturally sun kissed.

Sometimes the most beautiful hair color is not about an over complicated application. It is about enhancing what is already there and creating a color plan that works with your hair.

Not every appointment needs highlights, lowlights, or a major transformation. Sometimes it is simply maintaining the foundation and letting nature do the rest.

It’s estimated that over 50% of people will experience hair loss in their lifetime.

The top reasons you will experience hair loss:

1. Genetics: If it runs in your family, like male or female pattern baldness, you’re more likely to deal with it.

2.Hormonal changes: Things like pregnancy, menopause, or thyroid issues can cause shedding.

3.Medical Conditions: Autoimmune diseases (like alopecia areata), infections, or illnesses like lupus and diabetes can lead to hair loss.

4. Medications: Certain meds like those for cancer, depression, or high blood pressure can cause hair loss as a side effect.

5. Nutritional Deficiencies: If you’re not getting enough key nutrients (like iron, protein, vitamin D, or zinc), your hair can thin out. Rapid weight loss will trigger extreme hair fall out.

6. Stress: Physical or emotional stress can shock your system and cause temporary hair shedding.

7. Hairstyling and Chemical Treatments: Overdoing it with heat, chemicals, or tight hairstyles can pull your hair out over time.

8. Aging: As you get older, your hair naturally thins due to changes in how it grows.

9. Illness: Getting sick can trigger telogen effluvium(hair shedding phase.) This usually arrives 2-3 months after an illness.

All these factors can work alone or together, depending on the person.

Did you know you have the option to blend your grays with a demi-permanent color?

If you have about 25% or less of silver, a demi-permanent color could be the perfect solution. Unlike permanent color, the demi color transparently tints the greys, like a lip gloss. This subtle touch can enhance your natural shade while adding shine and dimension.

You’ll hear people say hair extensions ruin your natural hair. And honestly, they absolutely can when they are installed improperly or the at-home care is not followed.

But healthy extensions should never leave your hair worse off than before.

I take installation, placement, density matching, and scalp health very seriously because protecting the hair underneath is always the priority. And with the right method and proper maintenance, your natural hair should still be thriving and growing.

I truly hate when someone has had a painful or damaging extension experience because it does not have to be that way.

Pictured below is one of my clients before ever wearing extensions and what her natural hair looks like now after removing them.

When you have a naturally darker base color, caramel, beige, and copper tones usually compliment your hair the most.

The reason is because dark hair naturally has warm underlying pigment. So when we work with those tones instead of constantly trying to fight them, the results are richer, shinier, and more harmonious overall.

That doesn’t mean you cannot have cooler tones, but softer warmth tends to look more natural, dimensional, and lower maintenance on a deeper base.

Letting your natural base color grow in to become your lowlights will almost always be the lower maintenance option. Especially if you constantly feel like your turning brassy.

That was exactly the case here. The brown lowlights she had previously were fading out and leaving behind warmth that became brassy over time.

But guess what we added back in instead? Red!

Not an overpowering red, but a rich mocha red tone placed intentionally to enhance depth, dimension, and shine. The best part is when these tones soften over time, they fade beautifully and keep the hair looking lived in instead of muddy or overly warm.

Sometimes working with the natural underlying pigment instead of constantly fighting it is the secret to a more effortless, healthy looking color.

She told me she wanted her natural red hair to feel vibrant again. Challenge accepted!

When creating a color plan, I always take lifestyle and maintenance into consideration. Since she prefers to go 10+ weeks between appointments, adding vibrant red lowlights was the best choice instead of doing an all over color that would leave a harsh regrowth line.

This gave her richness, dimension, and that fiery red feel again while still allowing for a softer grow out that works with her natural hair.
