I hate the word pampering.

I hate it because it shrinks real care into something frivolous.
It turns necessary nervous system support into a luxury accessory.
It makes people whisper about massage like it’s dessert instead of dinner.

“Pampering” suggests excess. Indulgence. Something cute and optional you do after the real work is done—if you’ve earned it, if you have extra money, if you’re not being “dramatic” about your stress, your pain, your exhaustion.

But what I do as a massage therapist is not pampering.

I am working with people whose nervous systems are fried.
People who live in a constant low-grade fight-or-flight and don’t even know it anymore because it’s been normalized as adulthood.
People whose bodies are holding years of unprocessed stress, grief, vigilance, over-responsibility, and survival.

That doesn’t need a bubble bath label.
It needs care.

Touch that helps a body downshift isn’t extra.
Rest that allows the brain to reorganize isn’t elitist.

🙌
Practices that support regulation, safety, circulation, digestion, sleep, immune function, and emotional resilience are not luxuries—they are maintenance for being human in a world that is chronically overstimulating and demanding.
🙌

We don’t call therapy “pampering.”
We don’t call physical rehabilitation “pampering.”
We don’t call medication or sleep or nutrition “pampering.”

So why do we do it to bodywork? To rest? To nervous system healing?

Because somewhere along the way, care—especially care that feels good—was framed as selfish.
Especially for women.
Especially for caregivers.
Especially for people taught to push through, override, and perform wellness instead of actually experiencing it.

Massage isn’t about being spoiled.
It’s about reminding the body that it’s allowed to feel safe.
It’s about giving the nervous system enough quiet to repair itself.
It’s about helping people function better in their lives—not escape them.

Calling it pampering keeps people disconnected from their bodies.
It keeps them minimizing their needs.
It keeps care optional instead of foundational.

I don’t offer pampering.
I offer regulation.
I offer relief.
I offer a place where the body can stop bracing for a moment and remember how to rest.

And that shouldn’t be rare, or guilt-ridden, or reserved for special occasions.

That should be normal.

Thank you, rant over🙌
