it's Back To School Time.

and whew! 😂

the the parents getting everybody up, dressed, fed, dropped off, picked up, supplies bought, forms signed. we see you!

and to the kids walking into new classrooms, figuring out where they fit, who they're going to sit with, what teacher they got, and whether this is finally going to be their year...

we see you too.

this time of year always makes me consider about school and what it felt like for me.
because baby... i was the different one. 😂
and i knew it.

i was creative. sensitie. observant. i noticed everything.

but i didn't necessarily know what to do with all of that yet.

i remember being in class and having ideas, but not always having the confidence to say them out loud. sometimes i would look around first to see what everybody else was doing before i decided what i was going to do.

i spend a lot of time trying to figure out where i fit.

it took me along time to find my voice.
like a really LONG time.

and the funny thing is, now i make a living helping other people find theirs.

sometimes it's finally cutting the hair. sometimes it's deciding we're done fighting the afro; and sometimes you come in and don't want to do a damn thing but get your hair washed, drink something good and sit there quietly.

i understand that too.

because growing up, my nervous system was almost always on edge.
i was constantly taking in the room, the people, the energy, everything. while also growing up in a very traditionally religious home, with no wiggle room.

i didn't have the language for nervous system regulation then; i just knew what it felt like to need somewhere i could come down, and years later, without even realizing it at first, i built that place.

that's why the salon feels the way it does.
the music.
the plants.
the pace.
the conversations.
the quiet.
none of it is accidental.

i wanted to create the kind of space where you could walk and not have to brace yourself. where you could trust and be trusted.

so as everybody heads back to school, i've been considering about that earlier in lie version of me. the one sitting in the classroom trying to figure out where she belonged.
i wish i could tell her:
you're not going to find the room you fit into.
YOU'RE GOING TO BUILD IT.
and one day, other people who have spent their lives feeling a little different are going to walk through the door.

they're going to sit down. exhale. and somehow, while you're doing threir hair... they're going to find a little more of themselves too.
that part still gets me. 😭

thank you for trusting me with your hair, your quiet, your changes, your wild ideas, and all of the versions of you that have sat in my chair over the years.

we're still finding our voices.
we're just a little louder now.🍃🐰
