Update from Beau and Carissa Hairdressing about COVID-19

Our Update on COVID-19

Hello Everyone,

First and foremost, we miss you. We really love the work we do and all the relationships we have forged with you. We cannot wait until we can return to spending time with our clients in the space we love so dearly. We have received an huge outreach of emails, texts, donations, and gift card purchases from you showing support. We are incredibly grateful for all of it. Sincerely, thank you so so much.

As most of you know, Abbot has started to open the state this weekend. Fortunately (in my opinion), he did not open hair salons. There was some hinting that we could be included in phase 2. However, that will be based on the results of phase 1 and its possible that we will not be included. For the safety of the staff, our clients (you), and the financial well being of the salon, it is my hope that will be pushed to the last phase of opening.

Additionally, even if we are allowed to open in mid May, It is possible that we do not open. I will be taking into consideration all available information in doing so, but the health of my team and our clients is number one priority.

Because of these variables, we are still not booking or rebooking clients. It is an overwhelming process for both clients and staff to figure out the surge of rebooking. For the sanity of all, we will wait until we have a CONFIRMED date by both the state and myself before booking.

When we are able to open up, we will send a full list of the current guidelines, but here are some things that other states are requiring.

- Temperature taking at the door
- Screening of Symptoms
- Masks worn (held by client for access to hair)
Failing to bring a mask or pass these scans will prevent you from being able to receive services.

One of the biggest changes we will face is a reduction of occupancy to 25%. Heres what that means:

-staff will be working in shifts
-no double booking
-clients will have to wait in cars until appointment
-No accompanying children, under any circumstances. If children are receiving service, they cannot be accompanied by a parent. Parents must wait outside.
- beverages will not be served
- clients will be asked to minimize personal belongings to that which will fit in pockets

What this reduction in occupancy also means is that we will all be limited in our capability to see clients in our normal volume. Most of us double book, specifically colorist. We wont be able to do so. Not to mention the extra time we will need for additional sanitation practices. Its going to be pretty challenging. We ask that you please be patient with us. The demand for our services is backed up, its a higher demand than I've seen in my entire career. However, its likely that we wont be able to accommodate clients like we have in the past. I am working hard to make sure we troublehsoot this as it comes, but for all these reasons, its impossible to start booking. We simply dont know what this will look like until we are given the guidelines.

All that being said here is some insight you may or may not know/thought about.

The hairdresser industry has had a nearly impossible time trying to access federal relief funds. Most hairdressers are independent contractors or sole proprietors. This has made it very difficult accessing funds through normal means, although it has gotten better. Accessing PPP for small businesses is nearly impossible. My friend is California applied at 53 banks before getting approved. Additionally the push for personal services coming out too soon is dangerous to both our health and the financial well being of the salon. We cannot socially distance from clients and operating a business at 25% is not sustainable. We will not be able to operate under those terms for very long. By removing mandates, we lose protection against our landlords (both personal and at the salon) and are basically forced into working at a loss. I have started a petition to help other hairdresser across the country. My intention was/is not to make it political, but to be a voice for the physical and financial safety of my fellow hairdressers. If you feel compelled in supporting, please take 1 min and sign this petition. Although Abbot kept us out of phase 1, this petition supports hairdressers all over the country and helps signal to elected officials the concerns of the personal service-based industry.

Again, thank you all for your support. I promise we will reach out as soon as we have a confirmed green light.

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

best,

bb and carissa

Saturdays In December and Holiday Blow-Outs/Styling

Saturday Appointments and Holiday Styling

Hey All! The Holidays are upon us and I've opened up my books on Saturdays all through December. These will go fast and are limited hours, so make sure you grab them soon.

As most of you know, I don't take on a lot of blow-dry or styling appointments and this is the time of year they are in high demand. To help with the demand, I've recruited some of my teammates at the studio to help out.
Xuan (our beloved studio assistant) will be taking clients for blow outs and those beloved curling iron waves on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the holiday season. Her rates start at $35 and you can book online in the link below.
Gwan, our most experienced educator has some room for blow outs and specialty styling as well. She will be able to provide looks from casual to very formal, for all your holiday party needs. Her rates start at $45 and can be booked in the link below.

Happy Birthday to this pretty little lady and thanks for letting me hairplay. A bit of razor love for a soft, shaggy vibe. Styled using Lift and Powder from @hairstorystudio. @ Hairstory Studio Dallas

Suitability is always my number one concern when working with my clients. @discodaydream came to me wanting change. She brought great reference photos of some “French-girl” bobs. Although Lauren has the face to wear whatever she wants, the wavy and fuller texture to her hair wasn’t going to translate the same way as her reference images. Of course she could wear a bob, but to get aesthetic she wanted, she would have to style her hair everyday with an iron. With concern for the health of her hair and my desire to give her easy/wash and go hair, I talked her into a mid-length, shaggy feel. Keeping the hair just beyond the shoulders prevents awkward grow out stages and the soft razored layers ensure that this cut will last at least 12 weeks (with a bang trim mid way though). Low-maintenance haircuts. Styled with Hair Balm from @hairstorystudio @ Hairstory Studio Dallas

I think it’s important to talk about money. I think it’s important to have goals. Although I love what I do so much, I also like to work hard and enjoy the fruits of that labor. When I mentor someone, money is an important topic. Create value, work your ass off, and you can do very well in this industry. At the beginning of this year, @carissa.obrien and I set a 6-figure goal for her first year on the floor solo. People thought we were crazy, in fact, people even got mad at us for even suggesting it. Not a lot of people understand Carissa and my relationship/process. It’s different and has developed due to a need for Carissa to grow as an independent hairdresser not my Assitant. It hasn’t always been easy, we’ve had a lot of very honest/transparent conversations, but my goal has always been for her to outgrow her need for me. She won’t brag, so I’ll brag for her. This week she hit the largest week of her career, a week that puts her in a category of top producing hairdressers......and easily beyond her target of six figures by end year. I’m proud of you girl, you earned it. Work hard, stay humble, empower others.....oh, and don’t pay attention to any of that negativity. It’s just noise.

@kendaloni all the way from the big 🍎 had grown out her pixie from @wessharpton for over a year! Today we cut off the tail and shaped up a little shaky bob for her to grow out...... hopefully not for another year:)
Set with Hair Balm under a dyer and finished with Undressed from @hairstorystudio.

A example of a big impact without much length change. I brought the length up a bit to help expose the neck. However, the bigger impact was made by changing the internal shape and shifting her from a “triangular or “A” shape to a softer, less bulky, free-moving shape. Bobs seem simple to the eye but they are a super technical cut. I think it’s easy to get lost in that technicality and not look at, or listen to the human you are working on. Some of my bobs are layered, some not, some super short, and some flirting with the shoulder. I try not to get too dogmatic about the technicalities and focus on creating a haircut that is the most suitable for my client. Styled by setting with Hair Balm under a dryer and then finishing with Undressed, both by @hairstorystudio. @ Hairstory Studio Dallas

@lilysavage_official with my bread and butter. Long(ish) layers and bit of razored face framing. Styled using Undressed by @hairstorystudio.

Throw back to last year when @julianmachann let me play and we got lucky with some incredible natural light in my back yard.

I did a razor thing on @marizuh and we hand-dried using Lift from @hairstorystudio for maximum body and hold. No brushes, irons, or complicated styling techniques, just soft texture with strong shapes that allow for effortless styling and low maintenance/extended time between cuts.

My Hairdresser Homie @elleofacut stopped by for her care-free, French-gal inspired bob. She’s a lovely soul and has such a pretty face to photograph. Note: this was cut with a razor aside from the fringe. She has a lot of movement on her hairline and I wanted to use as little tension as possible. I opted for shears and used some point cutting to help match textures with the razored look. Hand dried with Dressed Up/ Lift combo and finished with the amazing POW(D)ER from @hairstorystudio.

Nothing changes at this point, but things might get a bit busier. Make sure you plan ahead for appointments, and if at all possible, lets pre-book when you are in the studio next time.
Keep and eye out for pop-up Saturday's as I will continue to do those occasionally. They will always be first come, first serve.

Wow, what a wild ride the past 18 months has been. So many triumphs and a equal amount of screw-ups. I’ve had a killer support system with my friends, family, clients, my @hairstorystudio team in NYC, and this incredibly bad ass crew at @hairstorystudiodallas. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to grow daily and help others do the same. Today @d_magazine named me best Hair Stylist in Dallas for 2018. Now, if any of you know me, I don’t take public acknowledgement like this very well. Hairstyling and the “best” is very subjective to me. I also personally struggle with allowing myself to celebrate victories in fear of becoming complacent or gaining too much ego. That being said, as directed by one of my dearest friends, I’ll take this moment to sincerely thank the editors at @d_magazine and have a drink to reflect on the past 18 months of very hard work. All the gratitude to those who have helped me along the way. Photo by @blisskatherine @ Hairstory Studio Dallas
