🧠 TRAUMA RESPONSE SELF-CHECK GUIDE
Understanding Fight, Flight, Freeze & Fawn

Before anybody reads this and starts connecting dots…👀

NO, this post isn’t about anyone, any situation, relationship, argument, or anything that happened.

This is strictly for educational and informational purposes only. 📚🧠

Sometimes the way we react during conflict, stress, rejection, fear, or emotionally intense situations isn’t simply about being “too sensitive,” “too angry,” “too distant,” or “too nice.”

Sometimes, our nervous system develops patterns designed to help us feel safe.

Understanding these patterns can help us recognize our triggers, become more self-aware, and learn to respond more intentionally.

So let’s talk about it. 👇🏽

💥 1. FIGHT RESPONSE
“I try to regain control when I feel emotionally threatened.”

You may notice yourself:

• Getting angry or irritated quickly
• Raising your voice or interrupting to be heard
• Feeling the need to “win” the argument
• Feeling powerful when you’re assertive or aggressive
• Becoming defensive when someone critiques you

❤️ Common emotions: Rage, frustration
🧠 Core belief: “If I’m in control, I’ll be safe.”

Sometimes the Fight response can look like anger, defensiveness, arguing, controlling behavior, or needing to have the last word.

🏃🏽‍♀️ 2. FLIGHT RESPONSE
“I avoid or escape when conflict or discomfort shows up.”

You may notice yourself:

• Shutting down conversations to avoid conflict
• Keeping busy or distracting yourself when upset
• Overworking or micromanaging when anxious
• Physically leaving when you feel overwhelmed
• Avoiding deep or vulnerable conversations

💛 Common emotions: Anxiety, panic
🧠 Core belief: “If I get away, I’ll be safe.”

Sometimes Flight looks like constantly staying busy, avoiding difficult conversations, working excessively, emotionally distancing yourself, or physically removing yourself from situations.

🧊 3. FREEZE RESPONSE
“I feel paralyzed or disconnected when I’m triggered.”

You may notice yourself:

• Having your mind go blank during arguments or intense moments
• Feeling stuck, numb, or unable to act
• Dissociating or daydreaming when overwhelmed
• Having trouble making decisions under pressure
• Struggling to identify or express your feelings in the moment

💙 Common emotions: Helplessness, numbness
🧠 Core belief: “If I do nothing, I’ll be safe.”

Sometimes Freeze can look like shutting down, becoming silent, feeling emotionally disconnected, or being unable to figure out what to say or do.

🤍 4. FAWN RESPONSE
“I abandon myself to keep others happy or avoid rejection.”

You may notice yourself:

• People-pleasing to avoid conflict
• Saying “yes” when you really want to say “no”
• Over-apologizing, even when you aren’t at fault
• Feeling responsible for other people’s emotions
• Fearing that setting boundaries will make people leave

💜 Common emotions: Fear, guilt
🧠 Core belief: “If I keep everyone happy, I’ll be safe.”

Sometimes Fawn looks like constantly accommodating others, suppressing your own feelings, avoiding boundaries, or taking responsibility for things that aren’t yours to carry.

✨ WHAT CAN YOU DO NEXT?

The goal isn’t to judge yourself for having a trauma response.

The goal is to NOTICE IT.

When you feel yourself becoming triggered:

🛑 PAUSE
Give yourself a moment before reacting.

🗣️ NAME IT
Try saying to yourself:
“I’m feeling triggered.”
“I’m in freeze right now.”
“I’m feeling the urge to run.”
“I’m becoming defensive.”

🌿 REGULATE YOUR BODY
Take slow, deep breaths.
Ground yourself.
Move your body.
Take a walk.
Give yourself space.

💭 RECONNECT WITH YOUR VALUES
Ask yourself:

“What do I actually want to communicate?”
“What response aligns with the person I want to be?”
“Am I responding to what is happening now, or reacting from something I experienced before?”

🧱 CHOOSE YOUR RESPONSE

You may not always be able to control your first reaction, but with awareness and practice, you can learn to create space between the trigger and your response.

❤️‍🩹 And remember: You are NOT your trauma response.

These patterns may have developed as ways of coping with situations that once felt unsafe. Becoming aware of them can be an important part of understanding yourself and making healthier choices.

You don’t have to shame yourself for how you learned to survive.

You can acknowledge it.

You can understand it.

You can work through it.

And you can learn something different.

👀 AND ONE MORE TIME FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK…

NO, THIS POST IS NOT ABOUT ANYONE.

It’s not about a specific person.
It’s not about a relationship.
It’s not about an argument.
It’s not a subliminal message.
It’s not me throwing shots.

This is strictly for educational and informational purposes only. 📚🧠

So please don’t read this post trying to figure out “Who is this about?”

Instead, ask yourself:

“What can I learn about ME?”

Because self-awareness is powerful.

And sometimes the biggest wake-up call isn’t about somebody else…

It’s about understanding yourself.

👀🧠✨ STAY WOKE.

This self-check is for education and self-reflection and is not intended to diagnose anyone. Trauma responses can overlap, change depending on the situation, and look different from person to person.
