At 89 years old, Opal Lee laced up her sneakers and walked 2.5 miles to symbolize the 2.5 years enslaved people waited to hear of their freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation. She did it every year. And she didn’t stop until the whole country was paying attention. 🙏🏾✊🏾
For over 40 years, Opal Lee fought tirelessly to make Juneteenth a national holiday — knocking on doors, marching through streets, and refusing to let the world forget. In 2021, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law — and Opal Lee was right there in the front row. this Juneteenth 2026 The “Grandmother of Juneteenth” is celebrating her 100th BIRTHDAY. 🎂👑
