Behind the Chair of a Stylist

Every client who sits in my chair—even just once—becomes a part of me. You don’t just leave with better hair – you leave with a piece of my heart.

Your stories become woven into mine. Your joys feel like my joys. Your pain sits heavy on my heart. Your achievements make me proud. Your sorrow becomes something I carry with you. You all become family to me.

This month, my “family” has been hurting. One of my clients needed a simple dental implant… and instead ended up in a quintuple bypass. It gutted me. I see him every three weeks. When he missed his appointment, I knew something wasn’t right. Visiting him in the hospital felt necessary—not just for him, but for my own peace of mind. I needed to see that he was okay.

And today, another client—someone who shared her dementia diagnosis with me earlier this year—broke my heart in a whole new way. She didn’t recognize her own purse. She has good days and not-so-good days, but today wasn’t simply “off.” Today was hard. Really hard.

Thank goodness my mom happened to be in the salon. I can’t remember the last time her two-hour drive to see me meant so much. The moment I saw her, I just broke.

My parents have had their health struggles too, but today—this moment with my mom—was a reminder of how precious and fragile everything is. And beneath all the heaviness of this month, I’m filled with gratitude for the blessings my family still has, and for all my clients who are family too.

As I was working through my client’s hair today, I noticed some patches of hair loss. She came in, talking about her hair thinning out. I DID look prior to coloring, but I truly didn’t see them.

However, you can clearly see them, in the pictures. I took these to show her and discuss recommendations. I am NOT a physician. My recommendations were for her to see a dermatologist and a hair specialist (of which I did give options).
