Check out Smiths Mercantile next time youβre in for a haircut. They have yummy ice cream π¦.
Six years ago, I opened Smith's Mercantile because I believed something was worth preserving.
Before opening the shop, I spent years working for major retail companies. I watched online shopping explode, and while it brought incredible convenience, I also watched something else begin to disappearβthe experience of shopping.
Not buying.
Shopping.
Walking through a downtown. Talking with a shop owner. Finding something you didn't know you were looking for. Running into a neighbor. Slowing down for a conversation. Those moments can't be delivered behind a screen.
When I opened Smith's Mercantile, I wasn't trying to compete with the internet. I wanted to give people a reason to come downtown. Because thriving downtowns don't happen by accident. They happen when people choose to show up. They happen because of locally owned businesses, restaurants, coffee shops, and the people who walk through their doors.
Social media has become an important part of running a business, and I'm grateful it's introduced us to so many wonderful people. There are so many business owners who are incredibly creative at sharing their stories online, and I truly admire that.
For me, though, that's never been what this business was about.
I'm much more comfortable greeting customers at the door than talking to a camera. I'd rather help someone find the perfect gift than spend my day creating the perfect video. That's simply who I am, and I've learned that's okay.
My passion has always been what happens after you put your phone away and walk through our front door.
A conversation over the counter.
Kids picking out ice cream.
Someone finding the perfect gift.
Neighbors catching up.
A place where people feel welcome.
If we've played even a small part in bringing people together over the last six years, then this little shop has accomplished exactly what I hoped it would.
Thank you for believing in brick-and-mortar businesses. Thank you for believing in downtown De Pere. And thank you for believing in this dream six years ago.
Here's to year seven.
