When another session of not detangling hair yet shampooing turns into a long detangling session that mom decided she won’t continue to have if he won’t care for his hair …

And he chose the loc-life

I did instant locs on him … pictures at the end show almost a year later once it filled in.

Let’s get clear on the difference between hair growing vs retention work babe!
Hair grows from inside out, an optimum healthy and clean scalp allows the “ birth” - if you will, to be in a balance environment so it can start out correct … well it needs to start correct from the inside ( nutrition, stress, rest ) and everything impacts its life cycle from the environment it’s birth in and the care it receives.

Retention is work us cosmetologist are trained in. It’s the work that’s needed to nurture hair so that it’s healthy and it survives its life span - if that’s what the owner wants.

Retention entails: shampoo, conditioner, treatments, trims, heat-managment, style-compatibility . This is the care-work you’re entrusting the professional to do.

It’s not to say you cannot do it.

The scientific foundation to it is what they’re trained in. The ability to assess and read hair and understand it is their training.

For instance how to read for hair that doesn’t have proper protein-moisture balance for; or how dehydrated hair behaves; how to cut the hair so it looks more voluminous , what are signs of an unhealthy scalp, can this hair withstand getting color ?
The extensive hours that cosmetologist rack up by working on various head, hair textures and a spectrums of healthy to severely compromised hair strands sharpens their eyes to details; to the “ feeling” of hair fabric.
Add a healthy hair care cosmetologist into your routine if you’ve been stagnant with results!

Here are my top 4 reasons for making a shift away from style centered clients:

1. Styles don’t fix the foundation. Style-centered clients are focused on the end look, not the condition of their hair. But without addressing hydration, elasticity, and scalp health, the results are temporary—and often lead to ongoing damage.

2. It creates a cycle of dependency. When the priority is always the next style, clients rely on you to “cover up” issues instead of learning how to care for their hair. As a healthy hair professional, my goal is empowerment—not dependency. I’m naturally a disruptor. So I’ll challenge those habits especially if they’re causing harm.

3. Chronic, high-risk, High-tension styling often conflicts with hair goals. Many popular styles involve tension, heat, or manipulation that can directly oppose length retention, moisture balance, and overall hair integrity—especially for tight to tightest curls.

4. Long-term transformation requires consistency, not quick results.Healthy hair is built through routine, education, and intentional care. Style-focused clients often want instant results, while I specialize in sustainable progress over time.

The work I do is long, un-sexy and can become boring but true hair transformation is really like any huge life transformation !

It requires the same measurable variables over a period of time. So if there’s no agreed upon system to measure … it’s random and results will be random with no clear path as to what we are looking at ; If there is no agreement on what the variable we are working on are , there is no order ( you may be worried about length and I’m trying to combat the dehydrated state of your hair , and if there’s no start to verify time line… motivation is challenged.

Let’s start with booking an over-the-phone consultation, secure your first appr for Ed & deep assessment . This information will be helpful in build you a 6 month 4 cycle of steps to get your hair healthy!

What is time blindness?

It is when someone has difficulty accurately sensing or managing the passage of time! It is not about being careless - it’s more like your internal “ clock” isn’t reliable!

I’m sure you can see how dangerous and a mismatch this can be in my career.

What this looks like varies:

❌Underestimating how long things take ( “ this will take 10 min “ … it takes an hour)

❌Losing track of time when focused ( hyper focus)

❌Frequently running late or missing deadlines

❌Struggling to plan ahead or pace tasks.

❌Feeling like time “ disappeared” or moves too fast/slow.

I hear this could also be linked to ; ADHD ( I’m not diagnosed) anxiety, or stress, depression, or executive functioning challenges.

The ones I notice most with me is the first two and last one; underestimating , losing track of time when focused and feeling like time “ disappeared! My suspicion are it’s anxiety … but who knows 🤷🏾‍♀️

This doesn’t mix well with being a stylist given services vary a lot!

We are also weaving in and out of hyper-focused techniques ( cut, color, braiding, detail work) , there isn’t a natural “ clock check” like in a traditional jobs ( lunch time, breaks) and client conversation isn’t patterned like working with co-workers in corporate setting. Conversations for us it can be deep & personal, shallow and reserve , repetitive on current events like that of the last client that just left, additionally, there is add-on services = this can distort time when suddenly a trim, treatment or something not planned for is added 😭😩😵‍💫😪😮‍💨

I’ve willed, strained myself through thinking this is normal for over 10 years behind the chair. Now I’m slowly working on building a service base environment that hold room for the ease I need while servicing. At the moment this looks like a subscription/membership based experience so it creates predictability for me and ease and those who value predictability for themselves and ease for their providers will stay, come to the front.

It is currently in testing-mode with my “testy” clients. If you’re a current client and curious about this model, let me know.

I was hooked on synthetic braids starting from middle school , high school , through college!
Started dabbling in wigs after … i was just shifting the root issue unknowingly !
Yes those styles are fun and cute but they also helped me get into black girl hair neglect culture!
Looking at them as tools and accessories has now allowed me to be with them sparingly and prioritize the very hair that grow from my insides!
I knew it was deep when so much fear and anxiety fueled me at the idea of going to certain places or leaving my home woth my own hair . Get curious about what’s coming up for you !
As most of yall know I’m not anti-any styles or pro only being natural. It’s your hair , your sense of expression but make sure it’s coming from a place of power, joy and art and not from a place of fear, less-than, and stories about our hair being difficult , or a lot.
Bring your power back to you … so what if you switch up and they’re confused … you should be living FOR YOU!
