Retinol is in millions of skincare products. Here's what nobody put on the label.

Retinol is synthetic Vitamin A. And while the beauty industry has spent decades telling women it's the gold standard of anti-aging skincare, the science tells a more complicated story.

Retinol is fat soluble. That means the body doesn't flush it out. It accumulates. And where it accumulates most is in the liver.

German and Norwegian health orgs have cautioned that retinol and other vitamin A ingredients in cosmetics could cause people to take in toxic amounts of vitamin A, leading to liver damage, brittle nails, hair loss, and osteoporosis in older adults. These aren't fringe concerns from natural health blogs. They're warnings from government health authorities about a product sitting in millions of bathroom cabinets right now.

Then there's what retinol does to the skin itself.

Every application of retinol forces your skin cells to turn over faster than they naturally would. The result is a weakened skin barrier. Chronic dryness. Redness and flaking that the industry rebranded as a purge rather than a warning sign. And photosensitivity, meaning the skin that was supposed to be protected from sun damage becomes significantly more vulnerable to it.

For women over 40, whose skin is already thinner, already more reactive, and already losing collagen faster than it can replace it, this is the opposite of what aging skin needs.

And for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, the picture is even more concerning. Excess vitamin A consumption during pregnancy is known to cause birth defects that may affect a baby's eyes, skull, lungs, and heart. Norwegian health authorities have specifically cautioned pregnant and breastfeeding women to avoid cosmetic products containing vitamin A entirely.
