Our FIRST ‘This Place Matters’ post 🧡

Medina’s Barbershop, located at 514 N Locust St, once was home to the Denton Print 📄 Shop. The building was constructed in 1946 by W.R. Lakey of the Lakey Tourist Court 🚙⛽️, which was originally located next door.

The building was originally finished in a tile veneer with a concrete foundation. An approximately 483 sf addition was added at the rear of the property in 1948. The property at 514 N Locust St became the home of the Denton Print Shop in 1951. The print shop had originally been located at 512 N Locust St (Photo #2). In 1962, Denton Print Shop merged with Commercial Printing Co, to become Denton Commercial Print Shop. By 1972, the property had changed hands and became the home of Barns Realty Company, which managed and sold property 🏡 along Little Elm Creek, Hartlee Field, and East University between N Locust St and Bell Ave.

We do not know much about the buildings occupants after 1972, but we do know at some point after 1977 this became the final location of Joe Medina, Sr.’s barbershop. Joe Medina, Sr. started barbering in 1960. Based on newspaper articles, he began his career at the Esquire Center located at 2107 W Prairie St (Photos #3 & #4). By February of 1968, Joe had opened the University City Barber💈Shop at University City, which was located at Eagle Dr and Bernard St (Photo #5). In 1973, Joe had to move his Joe Medina Barber Shop from 403 W University St to 211 E Hickory St due to a lost lease. By 1977 Joe had opened Joe Medina Styling Center 💇🏻‍♂️on Denison St with his son Joe Jr. working along his side, eventually transitioning to 514 N Locust St (Photo #6).

Joe Sr. passed in 1997, but his legacy continues in Denton with his grandson, Joey Medina, who now owns and runs Medina’s Barbershop out of his grandfather’s former shop (Photo #7). Wonderful to see a family legacy come full circle, and for an 70+ year old building to serve as the center of it all. 💚
