🎶The effects that sound has on the human body.🎶
Have you ever been to a live concert that had a pretty expensive audio system that seemed to just seemed to hit all the right spots for you? Or maybe you could literally feel the base radiating through your body? Perhaps even after the show you could still feel your body tingling from being exposed to the music?
This is the power of sound on your body.
Little crash course in the physics of sound: sound needs a medium to travel from point A to point B. The most common medium to understand is air because that is the easiest way we can perceive sound BUT sound can travel through many different forms of matter such as water or solid wood/metals.
You probably remember from the 3rd or 4th grade that our bodies are made up of 60% water. Wait.. so does that mean WE are mediums in which sound can travel through? YUP, our bodies take on the sounds around us.
If you check out this video below, you can see sound creates new pathways and shapes in the water. If we are 60% water and sound is creating new pathways and shapes in water, then isn't it possible that sound can create new pathways and shapes within our bodies?
The sounds we listen to and the music we choose to surround ourselves with has an impact on our physical body. Its hard to deny when we see it right there in the video, water fluctuating and bouncing around in response to the sound waves being sent through it.
Makes you rethink the type of music you listen to huh?
When our bodies are in flux, and there is a lot of stimulating energy circulating through us, we start to have physical, mental and emotional responses such as anxiety, fear, confusion, pain and even fatigue.
I invite you to reflect on all of the different albums you listened to, concerts you have attended and even people you have had conversations with. Were they of good and positive quality? Did they add to your life or did they tear you down?
In yoga, we chant the sound of AUM to send healing vibrations down our body and into the bodies of the people around us. Not because we are coocoo (maybe a little) but because we recognize the subtle ways that the energy, especially sound energy, has an affect on us.
Maybe now you can select your sound energy with more intention. This can look like:
🔊Exploring new genres of music (think classical, lo-fi, instrumental, new-age etc.)
🔊Devote some time throughout your week to have silence in your room. Sometimes too much sound energy can be overwhelming, gotta bring that back into balance.
🔊Pick up a new instrument
🔊Listen to podcasts that talk about subjects that inspire you
🔊Have meaningful conversations with others
🔊Give one complement a day. Vocally of course, internet complements don't count in this challenge!
