The question I get most is "How do you do it without getting to attached??" My answer is always, "You're supposed to get attached."

You are in fact signing up to love selflessly, wholeheartedly for however long necessary.
The children we care for are facing a traumatic level of grief and loss not many can comprehend. Think about that. They're going through this without any adult in their family by their side. Even infants know the sound and scent of Mama and long for that!
If you can give love, there is a need to foster parents and that's the most important qualification.❤️

May is National Foster Care Month 💙 A time to raise awareness of the needs of children in care and the importance of providing them with safe, supportive, and loving environments. Every child deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued, which is why loving homes are needed. In the month of May we like to focus on recruiting foster parents who
truly desire to share a safe space 🏡 while meeting every need through this delicate time.
Have you ever considered foster care?

"....your purpose in life is what happens to people when you do what you do."

2025-26 has been the most challenging time for my business The Joy of Curls™️. Watching my mentors in the textured hair space struggle to remain open (or definitively decide to close) has left me with more questions than answers, wondering if I have what it takes to survive, but then I remember:
I do what I do primarily for the children in foster care who need to feel loved. ❤️
That right there nurtures my soul. And in the midst of uncertainty something comes along like this feature in to remind me that what happens to people (children) when I do what I do (nurture textured hair) is needed in the world. 🌏 Suddenly I can exhale, knowing whatever it looks like, whatever I'm facing, I was meant to do THIS!
Thank you my beautiful customers and community for your endless support and patience with me.
NourishMint minis are in stock.
I'm making calculated decisions on when/how to restock more of your favorites.
Thank you for walking alongside me
through the marathon of being
a beauty brand Founder/CEO.
Qué Será, Será! 🤍🫶🏽
-Blessings

Being an active foster parent sounds like this! There is a constant need for families who love children to be available to them during their darkest hour.
Black and Brown children enter foster care at disproportionately higher rates, so resource parents should consider their race and cultural needs when saying "yes." Most agencies no longer volunteer sharing the race of the child, so this is an important question to ask when deciding if you're the right fit. ✨

The Joy of Curls is a plant-powered curl care company with a mission to support the foster care/adoption community. In addition to providing products we share curl care and culture education with a trauma informed lens.

What your child won't tell you is,
living in a world where they are the "only" is exhausting.
The constant need to fit in.
The longing for cultural connections....
The comments that are painful to hear.

Instead they'll say they are "fine." Please don't take them at their word. There is nothing "fine" about being a child, completely isolated from people who share your history, your culture, your heritage and your traditions.
A child in foster care wants to feel safe and secure, but won't likely share these thoughts.
A child who is adopted may not want to risk hurting your feelings, and stay silent about theirs.
So what do you do?

In my course Curls, Care and Culture 💻we have deep conversations about how no matter where you live, you can raise a child of color who feels confident.

I hate to break it to you, but I need to:
If you're raising a Black child yet you won't walk into Black spaces (a church, a barber shop, a grocery store....) because you don't want to feel uncomfortable, that's a problem.

Your child doesn't get to choose.

No matter how long they've been in your care or how tiny they were when you adopted, the longing they feel for cultural connections will never go away. So what can you do? If you live in a town with little diversity it's time for a plan TODAY. 💯

You have a lot of love to give and
you want to provide a good life for a child in need I get it.
Before you take that step though, be real with yourself.
Have a conversation with adult transracial adoptees and you'll learn that love is not enough! If you are racially and culturally isolating a child by moving them in, that's an additional form of trauma. 🏠
Instead, focus on building a supportive community, surrounding yourself with people who will stand beside you while you're raising your children. People who will ensure your child knows and understands the fullness of who they are and where they come from. People who will help them feel seen and celebrated.🎉

I'm Joy and I teach cultural competency and hair care to agencies that serve the foster care and adoption community.
Comment "Culture" and I'll share a resource to support you on your journey. ✨

Cutting hair
sends the message that textured hair is "too difficult," but learning says it's worth the time.😌
Instead of cutting hair💇🏽‍♀️:
💡 Find a Black stylist.
💡Explore products together.
💡Pick a weekly Hair Day to practice, bond and build confidence.
