Oliver+james is a casual-luxe salon specializing in balayage and beautifully lived-in hair. We are exclusive carriers of the Oribe and R+Co product lines.
Our exceptionally trained team offers luxury services in a relaxed environment. We are artists who strive to inspire our clients, refine our craft and share our culture with the community. Our small team is tight knit and cultivates an environment of support and growth. Our space is located in the Western Gateway District of downtown Des Moines; an eclectic urban mix of historical buildings, modern architecture, locally owned eateries and serene green spaces.

Being the ⚓️ “Captain of the Ship” ⚓️ sounds glamorous until you realize you’re also the head of plumbing, the chief of morale, and the primary target for every curveball the universe decides to throw today. Ownership is essentially the art of making 1,000 decisions a day while pretending you aren’t just three toddlers in a trench coat fueled entirely by cold espresso. Because truth be told, ownership feels lonely at times. A constant ebb and flow of conquering challenges just to be punched in the face with a new one. All while pouring into everyone around you like you don’t only get 4 hours of sleep a night 😅 Now toss in kids and household management and you’ve hit the trifecta for high cortisol levels and a broken nervous system! 👏🏼
Half jokes aside, for me, it’s only ever been about the type of leader I show up as for my team. And in order to do so, my cup needs some pouring into every now and again.
