đŸ˜ĄđŸ”„đŸ€Ź I was pi**ed just now, reading what I learned about brands many of us grew up trusting: StarKist, Chicken of the Sea, and Bumble Bee. These were childhood lunchboxes, tuna melts, Tuna Helper nights, and the “healthy” protein parents bought because they thought they were doing right by their families.

Then you find out these same companies were tied to a criminal price-fixing conspiracy, artificially driving up the price of a pantry staple while working families stretched every dollar. Bumble Bee pleaded guilty. StarKist got hit with a $100 million criminal penalty. Chicken of the Sea avoided prosecution by snitching on the others. So, while America was trying to feed its families affordable protein, these folks were rigging the game.

And this the part that got me the most heated, because most people think tuna is tuna. Period. One fish. It’s not. Commercial canned tuna can legally be different species like skipjack, albacore, yellowfin, and tongol, all with different mercury levels. That’s why you see the varying textures each time you open a can.

Albacore can carry significantly more mercury than canned light tuna. Mercury is a neurotoxin, meaning we’re talking about something linked to impacts on the brain and nervous system: memory problems, numbness, tremors, coordination issues, developmental harm in children, and risks to unborn babies when pregnant mothers consume too much over time.

So, let me get this straight: a product marketed as the healthy choice, fed to children for generations, eaten by gym folks chasing protein, and chosen by people trying to avoid unhealthy foods comes with criminal corporate behavior, mercury concerns, and years of questions around BPA-lined cans tied to hormone disruption concerns?

And we’re supposed to just shrug?

This is exactly why people don’t trust the food industry. Because profit keeps getting prioritized over people, and the burden somehow falls on regular folks to become investigators just to figure out what’s safe to put in our damn grocery cart.

I will never buy any of those brands ever again after uncovering all the horrible s**t they’ve done. It’s much more moral issues surrounding these companies outside of just giving us random species of fish and calling it tuna, while inflating prices. Dig deeper and see how they treat their fisherman partners and more. I love tuna, so I had to source brands that were ethical in their practices and are very transparent in what is in the can, along with protecting us from BPAs and ensuring that the can is actually TUNA!

So if you’re like me and still want a good tuna sandwich here and there, purchase brands like: (1) Safe Catch, (2) Wild Planet, and (3) American Tuna. But the fact we even have to make a “who can we trust?” list says everything about our nation.
