A little history of Reed Barbering - Robin’s

It all began in 1989, Norm Wilson was one of the barbers in Dexter. He would go and visit where my husband Gary works in Chelsea along with Dave Murphy, he would get his haircut there once in a while. And he found out that my husband Gary was married to a barber and that’s me/Robin. So he came to where I worked on Carpenter Road on the border of Ann Arbor & Ypsilanti. He sat down in my chair to get a haircut, and while he was there, he interviewed me, looked at his haircut and offered me a job in Dexter. I said I wasn’t sure but I would come and check it out, at that time, he showed me his barbershop that was located next to Hackney Hardware store downtown. And he also took me to Cousins Heritage Inn restaurant for lunch, very impressive. I told him I needed to think about it and the next day I ended up calling him and telling him that I think I’m gonna pass at this time but thank you so much for the lunch. He wasn’t really to happy, he did want to work alone.

Not quite a year later, we are now in 1990, Norm called me and said what is it going to take to get you to work with me? I told him I don’t think the small town Dexter is ready for me, a female Barber in a Small town Barber Shop. But if I don’t have to quit my current job, I would give it a shot. So I started March of 1990, I did one single haircut my first day, that was my buddy John Wheeler, he would even stop in every day for awhile to check on me.

As time went on, I would do two or three or four haircuts in a day, now I’m getting up at 5:30 am, driving from Napoleon to Dexter and I work six hours there and then went into my second job and worked until 8 PM, I may have been 23 years old, but after three or four months of that, I was getting a little tired. So I said to Norm, I’m gonna have to make a decision on one of the jobs and it doesn’t seem like it’s gonna be this one. He said I really don’t wanna work alone, do you think you could possibly take some time off of your other job and I will leave this shop for three weeks and you work it by yourself , that way people don’t have a choice between you and I they will just sit in your chair. I said I would give it a try and it actually worked. Back in 1990 Dexter was used to two barbers in town, Norm and Dick, when a female came in, they were not quite sure about me and they were just comfortable with the men to cut their hair.

November 1991, Norm moved the shop to the corner of Main St and Baker Rd. This little, but big building sure has been perfect for a barber shop. Norm would say, all roads lead to us.

The year of 2001, started off with Norm getting sick, Norm had just turned 60 years old and he found out he had cancer, he and his wife talked with me and offered for me to buy the barber business, we were praying that Norm would beat the cancer but sadly that same year in December Norm Wilson passed. It was like losing my dad, he was my friend. I will always remember what he said to me about owning a business, just take it one day at a time, you will do great. We worked together for 11 years.

So the job that I was going to quit 34 years ago has been nothing but amazing. The Dexter people, accepted me, welcomed me and have loved me through the years. In return Dexter has been one of the small towns I call My Home, I may not live here, but I definitely know a lot about Dexter, I know a lot of people, generations of families, the pleasure of cutting first haircuts on young children, watching them grow to adults and bringing their children in for their first haircuts. I have had grandfathers, fathers, sons, and daughters, they brought in their wives for cuts. It’s been great to know families.

The opportunity to cut hair here for the last 34 years has been incredible and more than just haircuts , it’s been about friendships, trust, and a listening ear.

As far as I know, I’m Dexter’s first female barber in the barber shop.

I know I still have lots of years behind my chair on the corner of Main Street and Baker Road.
I look forward to every day, I love my job, I love Dexter, and I love my Dexter family.
Here’s to the rest of my story here in Dexter.

Today when you walk in, you may be welcome by Molly, our shop dog, she loves her job.

I have had many barbers and cosmetologist that have worked along side me, and are making the shop a better place. I Thank you so much and love you.
GO DREADS!!

Thank you everyone,
Robin Reed
