It’s been so wild and eye opening doing these last pop ups to sell through our remaining retail stock; I’ve learned so much and I want to take an opportunity not only to thank you, but to say a few words.

It is nobody’s fault that small businesses are on the outs. Capitalism makes everything insanely difficult. Inflation and our economy make it nearly impossible for most people to realistically choose small business over other options. Everyone is overworked, and underpaid; especially the the core demographic for a q***r friendly beauty & gift shop.

Unfortunately online shopping and big box stores have become a necessary evil in our lives; as we are all so f**cking exhausted.

It’s so rad that we even lasted two years, and I’m thankful for everyone who made my dream possible. My dream began in the 90s (before Amazon and the big box took over) in Santa Cruz CA (not in the conservative midwest) so it’s actually AMAZING to me that I was even able to do it!

It became impossible for me to do everything; run an esthetics salon, hire, train, find new brands, stock inventory, run payroll, do taxes, take clients full time, the list gos on…

At the end of the day I am a single woman who is nearly 40 and I was working over 100 hours a week for two years and I couldn’t keep it up. Owning a home and having four pets and trying to BE A HUMAN. I almost collapsed.

Please know that my decision to no longer do retail was not an easy one, and every time someone tells me how sad they are about it- know I am 100 times more sad.

We are still here, but have decided to provide services that cannot be replaced in a capitalist system, and we hope if you need these services you’ll choose us!

As dismal as the world may seem, I hope you all vote (not for perfection, but for PROTECTION) because if we avoid a descent into a dictatorship there can still maybe be some hope (who knows but it’s worth a shot, right?)

I have been thinking about how to concisely say all the things I want to say about this period of transition, and I think I’ve narrowed it down;

• First of all, wow, and thank you! I got to talk with a lot of customers shopping on Saturday who are sad, but understanding. It blows my mind how many people really care, and I wish I could afford the energy to stay open for all of you!

• Small, ethical, inclusive retail is HARD.

• I am excited to be able to put my full energy in to what I am best at- providing people with experiences and services that change their lives; and training other professionals to do so.

• We are still committed to our mission that beauty is for EVERYONE and will remain a safe space for all who need beauty services.

• Thank you, again, for allowing me to live out my childhood dream of owning a beauty shop— even for a short while! (This was a much for feasible dream in the 90s 😂)

• I hope to see you all still, as we will slowly continue to add services to our menu 🥰

Mark Rodenbiker a true champion of community 🤍

Have you ever noticed the Barbie planter in the shop? Mark made that. The shelves we use for pop-up markets? Mark gave us those. The plants we neglect to keep alive and somehow are magically replaced? Mark again.

He never missed an opportunity for a bathroom selfie, or chance to tell someone they need to visit our store. Mark believed so deeply in community connection and the importance of small business (if you own a small business in Fargo you probably know him.) He donated to non profits often without hesitation, and honestly believed in making this world a better place.

You will forever be a part of KBB, Mark. Thank you for being a shining example of what it means to truly be a good person.
