“No pain, no gain” belongs in exactly one place in my Massage Suite: nowhere. 💛 Somewhere along the way, we developed this strange idea that the harder a Massage Therapist works, the more effective the Massage must be. If we aren’t digging, crushing, grimacing, or breathing through discomfort, are we even accomplishing anything? Absolutely. In fact, Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a beautiful example of why more pressure does NOT automatically mean more benefit. MLD uses exceptionally light, slow, rhythmic movements because the superficial lymphatic vessels we’re working with don’t require deep muscular pressure. I always think of the lymphatic system as a baby deer: you coax it gently. You do NOT ham-fist the baby deer. 😂 Properly performed MLD is used to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid and can be an important part of managing lymphedema and certain types of swelling or edema. It may also be incorporated into appropriate post-operative care when medically indicated. The fascinating part is that if I suddenly decided to “really get in there” and started applying deep pressure, I wouldn’t be making the technique better or more effective. I’d be moving away from the technique entirely. 🌿 There are absolutely Massage modalities where firmer pressure has its place, but pressure is a tool, not a scoreboard. A Massage does not have to hurt to count. Sometimes skilled bodywork means knowing exactly how much pressure to use… and having the restraint not to use an ounce more.

Date night just for an upgrade
Let’s give one of our Premium Upgrades a little love: Heavenly Hair & Scalp. 💆♀️✨ I still remember giving some of my first scalp massages and watching guests leave wonderfully relaxed… with greasy, matted hair. 😬 I decided pretty quickly: never again. So instead of reaching for a traditional Massage oil, I created our own proprietary blend of green tea extract and bergamot essential oil in a leave-in conditioner, giving me the slip I need for slow, luxurious scalp work without absolutely drowning your hair in oil. And the fragrance? Green tea and bright, citrusy bergamot together smell plain AMAZING. 🍃🍋 Then comes one of my favorite parts: long, flowing strokes through the hair with a boar-bristle brush, turning an ordinary scalp Massage into something that feels much more polished, deliberate, and deliciously pampering. Heavenly Hair & Scalp can be added as a Premium Upgrade, but if your idea of heaven is an entire appointment devoted to your head, scalp, neck, and all that glorious hair attention, it also pairs beautifully with the inspiration behind it: our Tea & Tresses Dry Head Spa. No shampoo bowl. No rinse. Just an entire experience devoted to slowing down from the shoulders up. 💛 Sometimes the best additions to a spa menu begin with one little thought: “There HAS to be a better way to do this.” Call or text (218) 481-7881 to add Heavenly Hair & Scalp to your next visit or ask about Tea & Tresses.

Starting in September, Beyond Gold has decided to feature one service from our menu every month that deserves a little spotlight of its own. ✨ Our very first Monthly Featured Service is Herbal Reflexology, and this one was made for people who want to sink into warmth, beautiful fragrance, and an hour or more of genuine rest. 🌿 Herbalism is the practice of working with plants and their aromatic, sensory, and traditional properties, while Reflexology uses precise pressure techniques on reflex areas of the feet, hands, and ears. Herbal Reflexology brings those two worlds together in one wonderfully cozy experience. We begin with little herbal sachets filled with rosebud, dried lavender, and jasmine, intentionally infused until they’re warm, fragrant, and ready to be worked over the feet. 🌹 Then come our steamed herbal wraps, infused with lavender and jasmine essential oils and wrapped around the feet in soft, aromatic heat. Warm salt stones add another layer of delicious warmth, gliding and resting against the feet between precise Reflexology techniques, while attention to the hands and ears completes the experience. Lavender, rose, jasmine, steam, warm stones, gentle pressure, and plenty of unhurried time… every detail has been curated specifically around relaxation and rest. 💜 September’s Featured Service is 10% off all month: 60 minutes for $90 or 90 minutes for $126. If you’ve been wondering what Herbal Reflexology actually feels like, September might be the perfect month to find out. Call or text (218) 481-7881 to reserve your session. ✨🌿
Anybody else hit 10 AM and suddenly feel like they’ve already put in a full day? 😴 I am ALL too familiar with the mid-morning slump. I swear, no matter how much coffee I drink, no matter how much Dr. Pepper I can get my gills on… I could ALWAYS go for a nap. 😂 And lately, I hear some version of “I’m just tired all the time” from so many guests. It isn’t always someone doing demanding physical labor, either. Sometimes we’re simply carrying a lot. Since 2020 especially, I think many of us have also become much more aware of something humans have always needed: connection. We are social, sensitive creatures, and safe, welcome human touch is one form of connection that can be surprisingly absent from modern life. That’s one reason I personally value having Massage as part of a regular routine, whether that means weekly, monthly, or simply when life allows. It isn’t a cure for fatigue, and persistent or unexplained exhaustion deserves to be taken seriously, but there is something profoundly different about giving yourself time when you aren’t working, scrolling, answering, accomplishing, or taking care of somebody else. You’re simply allowed to receive safe human touch and rest. 💛 Sometimes sleep is what we need. Sometimes connection is something we’ve been missing, too. And if it’s been a while since you’ve given yourself that kind of time, consider this your gentle invitation to put a little rest on the calendar. Call or text (218) 481-7881 whenever you’re ready. 🌿
Good morning, Duluth, and welcome back to school! 🍎📚 There’s something special about a first day of school here: early September air off the lake, backpacks heading toward bus stops, families starting their morning routines again, and school buildings all over Duluth coming back to life after summer. I still remember that little nervous bubble of anticipation in my stomach before every first day of school. It didn’t matter what grade I was starting, how familiar the building was, or how many times I’d already been through the first-day-jitters routine. There was always something about that morning. The new schedule, the new teachers, the familiar faces you hadn’t seen all summer, the unfamiliar ones you might know by the end of the year, and that strange feeling that absolutely anything could happen between September and June. So, to every student across Duluth and our neighboring North Shore communities heading through those doors this morning: I hope someone saves you a seat. I hope you find your classrooms without too much wandering. I hope lunch is good, your teachers make you laugh, and at least one moment today makes you excited to come back tomorrow. And to the parents, teachers, school staff, bus drivers, and everyone else beginning another school year right alongside them, I hope your first day is a good one, too. 💛 Here’s to sharpened pencils, packed backpacks, nervous butterflies, Lake Superior mornings, and a whole school year still waiting to be written. ✏️✨
Mechanical Massage is MUCH older than the Massage chair. 🤯 In the 1850s, Swedish physician Gustav Zander began developing elaborate machines that used levers, weights, moving pads, and other mechanisms to reproduce controlled movements and Massage-like actions. By the 1880s, physician Joseph Mortimer Granville had developed an electrically powered percussion device, an early ancestor of today’s vibrating and percussive Massage equipment. But the story takes a wonderful turn in 1954, when Nobuo Fujimoto developed the first mass-produced Massage chair in Japan. His early prototypes were built with materials including wood, bicycle chains, and even softballs, and the finished chairs found a natural home in Japanese public bathhouses, where guests were already coming to relax and unwind. 🪑✨ Over the decades, simple mechanical movement became rolling, kneading, tapping, computerized programs, airbags, body scanning, heat, reclining systems, and eventually zero-gravity Massage. Nearly 170 years after Zander’s early experiments, we’re still exploring the same fascinating question: how much of the experience of Massage can we teach a machine? Here at Beyond Gold, that story has found its way into the Astral Spa Lounge, where mechanical Massage has become part of something even bigger: light, sound, scent, warmth, and an entire environment built around letting yourself disappear for a little while. 🌌 From Victorian machinery to zero gravity… what a strange and wonderful journey relaxation has taken.
