MEMORIES OF GLENWOOD — WHO REMEMBERS THE HOT COMB?
Now THIS picture will take some folks back!
Long before flat irons and many of today’s styling tools, there was the hot comb—also known as the pressing comb. For generations, it was an important part of hair care in many African American homes and beauty shops.
Who remembers sitting in the kitchen while that comb was heating on the stove? And you already knew what to do when you heard:
“Hold your ear!” 😂
You had to sit STILL, too! One sudden move and you might leave that chair with your hair pressed beautifully—and a little reminder on your ear or forehead!
But the hot comb represents more than a hairstyle. It brings back memories of mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, neighbors, beauticians, kitchen chairs, Saturday-night hair sessions, Sunday-morning church preparations, laughter, conversations, and family traditions.
For many Black women, hair care was also a time of bonding. While somebody was getting their hair pressed, stories were being told, wisdom was being passed down, and memories were being made.
And can we talk about that smell when the hot comb met the hair? If you know, YOU KNOW!
MEMORIES OF GLENWOOD FAMILY: Do you remember getting your hair pressed with a hot comb? Who pressed your hair? Was it your mother, grandmother, auntie, older sister, or the neighborhood beautician? And did you ever get that famous little “hot-comb kiss” on your ear?
