Weโve already passed the half way mark, and weโre staring into the eyes of three straight minutes of plank. Pressing the floor away, pulling our bellies up and in, tucking our tail bones under and stepping into whatโs possible. Side plank, high plank, forearm plank, however it looks, whatever you need, JUST DO IT. โฃ

My handstand journey has been a frustrating one. Since I was a kid being upside down really threw me off. I didnโt fear it, but when I came back to my feet I never felt comfortable. Whether the world was spinning, or blood was rushing through my head I felt unbalanced/dizzy. Luckily, I found yoga. Yoga has taught me a new approach. Instead of thinking โI canโt do this because blood is rushing to my head and Iโm unbalanced,โ I asked myself โwhy does it feel this way, and what can I do to make it feel differently?โโฃ

I discovered my โunbalanced/dizzyโ feeling stemmed from not taking my gaze anywhere specific. Kind of blindly throwing myself up a wall with my eyes just going where they went. Imagine if a ballerina was doing pirouettes without spotting, they would be dizzy after a single rotation! Now I place a focus point/object in between my hands. Sometimes itโs a prayer stone full of intention, sometimes itโs a dust bunny floating through the studio. In yoga, this practice can be translated to drishti or a focused gaze. โฃ

What about the blood rushing to my head? BREATH. Humans love to hold their breath; when preparing to move heavy weights, when trying to balance, or simply trying to stabilize the body. Essentially your brain is hyper focused on stabilization, so you have to learn to force the breath yourself. You can try counting out loud, or having a conversation as practice. Overtime it will feel less forced, and happen more naturally. Maintaining breath provides the oxygen necessary for your brain to stabilize your body upside down. โฃ

This is only two of the many difficulties I faced in my journey to handstand. Iโll try to share more as my practice continues to grow. โฃ
