This Poem by Amanda Gorman has shown me the power of words:

I very rarely speak about this but when I was a principal there was a shooting at our elementary school and to this day, I bare the scars. The shooter did not enter our building that day but rather took the life of the mother of his children at our front door. He was in our office days before inquiring about school safety and asking about why people had to be “buzzed” in the front door. The children, staff and families who share this day with me will NEVER forget the terror of that day. I found some peace in the way our community came together during this horrible time and by knowing that in the single most selfless gift a mother could give….by giving her life…this beautiful woman ensured that the monster behind the gun would NEVER have access to her children again. What I’m realizing now is that she also may have saved us all that day by giving her life. When the gunman was caught by the police he had more than one gun in his car. If he had entered our building this tragedy could have ended very differently. I KNOW our teachers and staff would also have sacrificed themselves for our children! Gun violence happens EVERYWHERE in this country.

Side note: I also had a gun pulled on me by a grandfather of a pre-school child at a different elementary school in a different district.

These are NO LONGER ISOLATED EVENTS

Next time you drop your kids at carpool, make sure you hug them tight because you might not get to pick them up again at the end of the day unless we actually STOP JUST “ PRAYING” for our children and START actually DOING SOMETHING!!!

Today I am sadder than I’ve been in a while. Karen’s niece said it best …people say “you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone…but we all knew”. Happy Birthday to you Karen and thank you for bringing so many amazing women into my life! You’ve given me family that I will now have for life! I love this woman and I’ve learned that death does not change that love or bond! Hug your people and make sure you take time to “know what you have”! We all did …I love you ya yas

That is a picture of a POLICE officer kicking a handcuffed suspect in the head. What in the F**K! Why would someone do this to another person? Have some decency oh and I hope this “officer” here’s jail time for this assault!
