The story behind the curls✨

So my lovely client Abbey has a beautiful story of how her hair years ago was super long, all the way past her waist, but then experienced unplanned shedding and thinning to the point she had to take matters into her hands and get extensions during her growing out phase.

When she came into my chair, I honestly thought she still had extensions in, but with her proper extension stylist(kudos to you, girl), who knew how to cater to her hair and not place extensions that would weigh and break her hair, Abbey finally decided to take those out and give her hair a break and during that process she discovered her natural waves were coming back and wanted to prioritize this part in her hair journey.

When she came in, I literally was like “girl your hair is so thick I was convinced you still had extensions in” which made her so excited to hear her hair is in a healthy space again!

So with our appointment, she emphasized “I just want you to show me what my curls can really do in this season” so I did just that✨

Our steps moving forward in her curly journey are:
* As new growth comes in, we slowly start trimming away the more unhealthy ends on the bottom.
* Take a long break from blowouts and see if we can maximize the top part of her hair to spiral more
* Slowly incorporate more of a curly haircut catered to her texture while also waiting for certain spots that broke off to grow in
* Incorporate more curly styling techniques
* Track the process as we go

I love when clients come in with such a passion to work on their hair and stop guessing for themselves. I have a feeling within 3 to 6 months, this girl‘s hair is gonna be a lot of people’s hair goals, and inspiration to those around her✨

Averie’s curl evolution

Averie is one of my faves because she is truly a color chameleon.
Just 3 years ago, she was the sun☀️ : warm blonde wanting
to experiment with color & execute her curl regimen

and now she's the moon🌑: totally killing it in this rich, dimensional brunette color and revived curls.

The best part for her was that we were able to preserve her curls through these years and truly see them transform with layers and proper products.
Any guesses as to how long she stays a beautiful brunette before we start working her back to blonde!?! 🤭

For years, society has labeled curls as wild, messy, unprofessional, or high-maintenance. We’ve heard it all—
❌ “You should straighten it for a more polished look.”
❌ “Curly hair is just too much to handle.”
❌ “It’s fun, but not professional.”

But here’s the truth: Curly hair is powerful, versatile, and stunning in every setting. ✨ It can be sleek and polished, big and bold, soft and romantic—whatever you want it to be.

At Genesis Curls, we’re about embracing your natural texture while keeping it healthy, hydrated, and thriving. I can relate deeply believing these stereotyped lies for many years, but it wasn’t until I was inspired by other curl queens and kings that kicked that narrative aside, that I was able to flourish in my own curly hair walk. Yes, it takes longer for others to get there, BUT YOU CAN unlearn these beliefs and live your God given curlz.

Lack of Definition– Your Curls Need More Structure

💡 What’s really happening:
• Weak curl structure is often a sign of uneven porosity, protein imbalance, or improper styling techniques.
• Product overload can weigh curls down, making them look undefined.
• Heavy, one-length hair can pull curls down, reducing bounce and definition.

🚫 What NOT to do:
• Don’t use too much product—it can coat the hair and prevent it from forming defined curls.
• Avoid brushing dry curls—it separates curl patterns and creates frizz instead of definition.
• Don’t skip layers if your hair is dense or long! Heavy curls without layers can lose shape and definition.

✅ What to do instead:
• Try protein/bonding treatments(bonding is solely for curls that are colored or been chemically processed)if your curls feel overly soft, limp, or stretchy.
• Use curl-enhancing styling techniques like finger coiling, plopping, or the bounce curl brush method.
• Get strategic layers! Removing weight allows curls to spring up and form better definition.

⁉️Did you know?
Heavy, one-length hair can stretch curls out, making them look undefined(as seen in the second photo). 👉🏽Layers help curls form naturally by removing bulk and encouraging bounce, especially for thicker or longer hair
